Childcare is one of the biggest challenges parents have today.  65% of children under 5 have all available parents in the workforce.  While high quality child care and early learning programs support child development and offer parents peace of mind, the reality is the demand for quality care far outweighs the supply. Many families struggle to access and afford the care options they want or need. We look at improvements that are underway to make childcare more accessible and affordable.

A new report in Bridge Michigan shows that since Governor Whitmer took office in 2019 Michigan has paid nearly a billion dollars in subsidies to encourage job creation. However, only one-fifth of the jobs promised have materialized.

April 25, 2025 ~ Lucy Ann Lance talks with Perry Seibert with the Michigan Movie Critics Guild for this week's Talking Pictures. “Sinners,” the new film by Ryan Coogler, director of the “Black Panther” movies. “Sinners” follows twin brothers in the 1930s Mississippi Delta who open a juke joint, but it explores themes of music’s power, cultural co-opting, and assimilation through the use of vampires as a metaphor. Despite some reservations about its length, Seibert praises the film’s depth, originality, and Coogler’s ability to convey complex ideas through imagery and subtext, recommending that people see it for themselves.

April 25, 2025 ~ Lucy Ann Lance and Producer Derek Laughlin discusses Ann Arbor’s potential plan to install retractable posts at 21 downtown intersections for safety and easy street closures during events like A2 Summer Streets, which will run from June 5th to August 31st as we head Downtown with the Main Street Area Association.
