But here's the catch, a cold front is barreling down from Quebec. And it's bringing a messy midweek system with it.

As the sun sets. Tonight stays mild — lows in the mid-30s statewide. Partly cloudy, light winds, quiet before the storm.

Wednesday is where things flip. Rain moves in across southern Maine — Portland and the coast see steady rainfall all day. But head north and it's a different story. The mountains and foliage country? You're getting sleet and freezing rain, aroostook sees snow mixing in by afternoon. Highs drop to the 30s and low 40s, travel could get tricky, especially on untreated roads.

Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the wintry mix continues north while southern areas stay mostly rain. Winds pick up — gusts to 25 miles an hour. By Thursday afternoon, the system clears out, but colder air settles in behind it.

Here's your heads-up for the week ahead, while friday brings mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 30s. Then another system arrives Friday night into Saturday — snow likely across northern Maine, rain or a mix along the coast. Sunday into Monday? Southwest winds gust to 30 miles an hour this afternoon, so hold onto your hat. Tonight stays mild — mid-30s statewide under partly cloudy skies.

Tuesday cranks it up another notch. Sunshine takes over. And highs push into the mid to upper 60s south of the mountains. Portland could touch 68 degrees. The coast stays cooler with a light sea breeze, but you're still looking at low 60s near the water. Northern areas reach the upper 50s to low 60s.

But here's the twist. Wednesday brings a backdoor cold front sliding in from the northeast. That warmth? Gone. Rain moves in across southern Maine, but up north, we're talking about a messy mix — freezing rain, sleet. And snow. The County could see 2 to 4 inches of snow before it transitions. A Winter Storm Watch is up for northern Maine Wednesday into Thursday morning. Travel could get tricky, especially for the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.

Thursday, the system clears out, but it leaves colder air behind. Highs only reach the 40s south, 30s north. Friday night into Saturday brings another round of snow chances statewide. Sunday? Yet another storm approaches, this one potentially packing strong south winds along the coast.
