So have you ever done or wanted to do a cool cover of someone else’s song?
If so, you may have some questions.
Maybe you made a cover version of a recent pop song. You completely remade it and redid vocals for it. Totally new version. Can you just put that on Spotify for sale? Can you put it on YouTube?
Maybe you did a remix and used the stem of the original song’s vocal. Can you put that out to Spotify? Can you show it off to anyone on YouTube?
Is there any way to license these to libraries or clear them for use in TV and film, or for YouTube?
Well, the answer is yes, yes, no, maybe, and maybe.

What will music licensing continue to make us income from this point on? The actors and writers are striking in Hollywood, what’s the need for sync licensing music if no shows are being made?
We already know that non-exclusive stock music has taken a hit across the board since the hey days of AudioJungle and Pond5 paying hundreds and thousands 10 years ago. Is it still an income we can count on and should you even TRY it?

July 24, 2023 EP77. Leaving “Stock” Behind | Introducing Non-Exclusive Music Licensing | With Stevie B
Today as part of celebrating the start of Make Music Income two years ago this week, we will redefine one of the core elements of this channel.
In fact, in my anniversary video I just released this week “8 Ways to Make Music Income,” I kind of alluded to this in that video.
We’ve been using a term that Steve and I have been debating what to call it for literally years.
When I started this channel, “stock music” was a hot topic. In fact, I owe much of the success to my friends and YouTubers like Daniel Carrizalez and of course Mr. Steve B. Whose channels talked quite a bit about this non-exclusive cousin to exclusive sync licensing/production music for film and TV.
Well, I’ve decided it’s time for a name change for the infamous “stock music” which is not a bad term or name for what it is. But the type of music we refer to as stock music can be used for so many things including Spotify and DSPs, Beat sales, Gaming music, incomes from other things like overhead music and other non-exclusive uses, it’s time we just rename it.
So YOU are here for that historic renaming.
