I have several people ask the question, "At what age did the earlier particular baptists immerse believers? Back then, did a person have to be a certain age to qualify for baptism?" I'm thankful for this question for several reasons. First, it is one I've wondered about and studied for years. Second, the basic answer from history is quite different from much of the modern practice of believer's baptism. And that means that there is almost certainly good to be gained in reflecting on the reasons behind this difference, regardless of where one ends up in practice.

In doctrine, Gifford opposed the early forms of hyper-Calvinism in his area. He corresponded with other Baptist and Congregational pastors, and attended the 1689 and later General Assemblies in London. He was a spiritual and financial supporter of the Baptist Ministerial Education Fund, though he had no formal education himself. He was one of the men chosen by the Assembly to try and put an end to the singing controversy in the 1690s.

Isaac McCoy (June 13, 1784 – June 21, 1846) was a Baptist missionary among the Native Americans in present-day Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Kansas. He played an instrumental role in the founding of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Kansas City, Missouri.

The first word the Confession uses to describe the nature of the atonement is “obedience.” Obedience is really the comprehensive category under which the atonement must be understood. If this surprises you, you should remember how often the Scripture itself speaks of the work of Christ as atonement.
