The Mana Pool

Chewie, Mike, Brian, and Dirk have been talking about Magic: The Gathering on the internet for almost 10 years (at the time of this writing). Since there are so many shows about strategy and tournaments, these dorks focus on all the fun you can have with the game outside of that, from flavor to philosophy to game design to history to whatever else we can come up with. We're funny, we're serious about what we do, and we love it!

It's that time again! I went to a Grand Prix, so now you get more Three Questions! This is the first of four shows from GP Charlotte 2016.

When I find myself at a big Magic tournament, I take my trusty digital recorder and ask lots of people three questions that are a bit silly, because I'm not going to ask serious hard-hitting stuff to players between rounds, to judges during their shift, and to everyone else while they're doing...whatever it is they're doing. Besides, my off-the-wall questions put them on the spot and reveal a little bit more about who they are as a person and as a Magic player.

On this episode I spoke to a pretty good variety of players. I hit up some listeners in JT, Sexy Jarod, and AJ. I bothered judges Michael "Scary Judge" Arrowsmith, Casey Brefka, and Charles Featherer. I tormented fellow podcasters Bill Bloodworth of Monday Night Magic & Enchant World and Jordan Kennedy, formerly of At Your End Step. And to round it out there's MTG cosplayer extraordinaire Christine Sprankle and WotC coverage guy (and Pro Tour Champion) Jacob Van Lunen and his lovely wife Tara and ADORABLE daughter Luna. And how about we finish off the episode with SCG's own sexy robot, judge, and tournament-runner guy Jared Sylva, who has a baaaaaad feeling about this. Sometimes it really sucks to be right all the time doesn't it?

I hope you guys enjoyed the extra work I put into this one. Once I had the idea to include everyone's musical response, I couldn't not do it, you know? Be sure to hit me with your answers to these Three Questions!

We weren't terribly excited about Battle for Zendikar. We were SUPER excited about Shadows Over Innistrad. What's the difference between these two sets? We're diving into the differences between both cases of nostalgia to figure out what's going on here. And since Brian's not here, we spend a lot of time rambling and tangenting in his honor. And because that's sort of what we do.

Be sure to stick around until the very end for a super awesome amazing announcement! And be sure to come back here on May 25th!

We're finishing off the last of the Planeswalker Oath episodes! In case you haven't been around long, we're extrapolating Oath cards for all the other planeswalkers in the game! We're also spitballing some ideas for the flavor text for these cards as well!

After all that is done we're going over some of YOUR Oaths that you've sent us over the last few weeks! We were only able to find the ones from email, website comments, and Facebook page comments, so we're very sorry if we missed yours! Feel free to send us more to any of these places and we'll totally see them!

Also, I got a new mic. I figured after 8+ years of podcasting it was probably about time. Feels good man.

To break up the Oaths a bit and to give us time to talk about some of the other stuff that's happened, we're doing something different this week. First off Mike & Brian recount their experiences at SCG States (while completely glossing over the fondue).

Then it's time for another Mythic Conscription, where we go through a pre-Mythic set and try to determine what might have been Mythic if such a thing existed. Because it shares some thematic similarities to Innistrad (and because it's so small) we went with The Dark. Pickings are slim, but the set is actually really neat and features some of the earliest versions of things we're seeing in modern times!

And of course we can't ignore some of the big news that's happened recently. There's the Pro Tour, the Platinum pay cut and following apology, and the judge lawsuit to talk about. That makes the episode title an unfortunate double entendre, but oh well.
