What is an acceptable act?  I believe we all struggle with knowing what an acceptable act is.  Remember when you were at that fancy dinner, and you did not know which fork was acceptable to eat your salad with?  Or when you got mad, at someone and you grappled if it was acceptable to send them a nasty email, a nasty letter or to just let them have it in a nasty personal exchange. 

David in Psalm 19 struggles with the notion of what is an acceptable act. He acknowledges the magnificence of God’s creation; he recognizes the perfection and goodness of God’s commandments and laws.  He understands his own sinful nature weakness which will keep him from following God’s commands. With this knowledge, David turns to God in prayer asking to let the words of his mouth and the meditation of his heart to be acceptable to the Lord.  Because God is his rock and his redeemer.

General Charles E. McGee, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, who flew a remarkable 409 combat missions in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam has died.  He was 102 years old.  

Life is made up of more than just the years that we live.  More importantly, our lives should be measured by the actions that we take.  

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer” is the direction of Psalm 19. 

By all accounts, General McGee lived a life full of acceptable actions.  He was an Eagle Scout, a top student in high school, an engineering student at the University of Illinois who cut short his studies to join the Tuskegee Airmen.  A husband and father of three the General spent his post-military career in corporate executive positions.  The General was a founder and past president of the Tuskegee Airmen, Incorporated.  A nonprofit designed to tell the story of the airman promoting excellence especially in communities of color.  He lectured widely about flying serving as an inspiration to the goodness of the human spirit.  

God will give us strength, peace, and joy when we decide to live a life doing acceptable acts for Him. General Charles E. McGee leaves a 102-year legacy of what is possible living a life doing acceptable acts for the Lord.

On the eve of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Pastor Marben teachers from Amos 5:21-24 about how God disapproves of the reframing of facts and events to suit the beliefs of those in power.  He uses the same logic from the Word of God to contend that the present-day whitewashing of events like the attack on the US Capital is equal to the reframing of the life of Dr. King to that of a happy man who went about marching and making speeches.  Instead of viewing Dr. King as people viewed Jesus, as a radical ordained by God to upset the social order mobilizing people to seek justice in the kingdom of God.

Whitewash is a solution that is used to cover up the paint that is currently on the wall – so that you can cover it with a new coat of paint.  Often that new coat of paint is of a different color than the paint that was previously on the wall.  When a painter whitewashes the wall stays the same however, it now is a new color.  A color that is more assessable to the people who are looking at the wall.  

A form of whitewashing takes place in the human condition.  We change the facts, ignore certain truths, and recreate history so that an event, is seen in a different light like some have done with the January 6 attack on the US capital.  The life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King have been whitewashed where some have reduced his words to fit causes that he would have never supported.  Tomorrow at Greater Saint Peter we will celebrate Dr. King with a sermon from Amos 5:21-24 entitled, the whitewashing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Remember because of the weather the church building will be closed.  So watch the service at 10:00 AM tomorrow on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/gsp9540 so until tomorrow blessings, peace, and love.

The upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday is not an ordinary holiday day.  It is a day where we give of ourselves in service to the community.   

This year we are encouraging members and friends of the Greater Saint Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church in Jonesboro, Georgia to create “Blessing Bags” to honor Dr. King.  

In the COVID-free safety of your own home, we are asking you to take a gallon size Ziploc bag and fill it with some of the items listed below.    Carry at least five “Blessings Bags” in your car available to give a blessing especially to those who are experiencing homeliness.   

What To Include:

• Hand-Warmers – Put a couple of packs in, especially during the winter, but even for those chilly evenings in the spring/summer/fall, these would be very welcome. You can a pack of 40 at Costco for around $15 ($.38/pk) 
• Bag of Quarters – These are nice to include for washing clothes at the laundromat put them in a snack-size Ziploc bag to keep them contained in a smaller area
• Bottle of Water – Mini water bottles work great.
• Baby Wipes – A small pack of baby wipes is a great way to help people feel clean and fresh
• Hand Sanitizer – Another great option to help folks feel clean and fresh.  
• Prepaid gift cards - 

In addition, include:

*If you have a lot of items to include in your bags, travel-size toiletries work great

·       Toothbrush

·       Toothpaste (travel size if you have a lot of items to put into your bag)

·       Floss

·       Soap (Collect soaps from hotels to use in your Blessing Bags)

·       Deodorant

·       Shampoo/conditioner (these are also great products to save from hotels if you don’t use them as they’re the perfect size for these bags)

·       Comb

·       Personal hygiene items (tampons, pantiliners, pads, etc for blessing bags for women )

·       Sunscreen 

·       Chapstick

·       New Socks

·       New Underwear

·       Inexpensive gloves

·       Granola Bars

·       Energy Bars

·       Tuna/cracker packs

·       Trail mix

·       Raisins

·       Peanuts

·       Fruit cup/ applesauce cup (& include a spoon)

·       Gum/hard candy

·       Hot Cocoa/Spiced Cider Mixes or on-the-go coffee mixes
