This episode is a very somber edition of TMWS as I talk to Vietnam veteran Bill "Sarge" Rider. Bill was part of the 1/9 Marine battalion that became known as the “Walking Dead" in the Battle of Khe Sanh. It was one of the bloodiest battles in history and Bill survived the 13 month engagement, but not without three combat wounds. To give a little history, the Battle of Khe Sanh began on Jan. 21, 1968, when forces from the North Vietnamese Army bombed the U.S. Marine garrison located in South Vietnam. Throughout his life, Bill has carried the pain of losing so many of his fellow Marines and it left him with depression and extreme survivor's guilt when he returned from the war. At one point, Bill decided that he would use his experiences to help other veterans deal with the mental challenges that often accompanies their return home. With this in mind, Bill co-founded American Combat Veterans of War, an organization that facilitates outreach and safe sharing groups for veterans, and the Director of Veteran Affairs for the City of San Diego. In 2018, Bill was recognized nationally for his work with veterans during a PBS Memorial Day concert in Washington, D.C.
Please let others know about this special show, especially our veterans. Bill has a very important message to share and help to offer.
