A beautiful tale of loss, love and adventure

Caseley Barata has gone through hell and doubts whether she can ever find her way back to a normal life again. While her beloved husband, Jago, was away at sea, Caseley watched both of her little boys get ill and pass away, and there was nothing she could do to prevent it. Tormented with grief she blocked herself away from everyone and suffered through her sadness and guilt alone. Now, almost one year later, and what little part of life that is left to her is threatened when it becomes common knowledge that Jago, who sails away as much as possible, has visited an old lover in the town. And when Jago informs her that he must travel to Egypt on an important political mission, Caseley is left with two choices - remain in their home where she feels useless and grief-stricken, or take a risk, and accompany Jago like she used to do in the past, and possibly salvage a love that had meant so much to her.

Jago does not want Caseley to travel with him as the there will be many dangers facing them in Egypt, but she is determined to be of use to him, and with her talent for languages and social subtleties, he knows that he needs her. Devastated by the deaths of his children, Jago yearns to be close to his wife again, but he knows that he let her down and he cannot forgive himself for what has happened. THE MASTER'S WIFE by Jane Jackson is a beautiful tale of love, loss, and finding the strength to face the future. Caseley and Jago have suffered greatly, and in their grief they moved away from each other, causing further pain. Caseley is my favourite character and her strength and bravery throughout this story took my breath away, and it was a joy to see her come alive as the story developed. Although Jago has made mistakes, I still felt for him, as he worked his way through his own emotions. Through stunning imagery and dialogue, I was transported from Alexandria to Cairo, and to the fascinating nomadic life of the Bedouin people. THE MASTER'S WIFE is the second novel of the 'The Captain's Honour' series, but it can easily be read as a standalone story. THE MASTER'S WIFE by Jane Jackson is a compelling historical story that left me breathless and I urge you all to read it as soon as possible.
