    Thoughts From Your Host…

There are a small handful of directors who have had Matineecasts about every one of their films since I went online ten years ago. Chris Nolan, PT Anderson, Alfonso Cuaron, Edgar Wright, and today’s director – Martin Scorsese.

The other names on that list are a little bit more circumstantial I mean, I like the films they make…but there are a lot of directors who will make me run a lot faster to the cinema.

    Scorsese though? Clear my schedule.

I think that’s what makes today’s episode something special. It comes on the heels of getting to see a Scorsese film on a screen when many won’t get that opportunity…and, well…it leads to an interesting conversation. I wonder of our reactions to this film will be similar to others when they get a chance to Netflix it in a few weeks…or if in that time the conversation around this film might have shifted in some other way.

I mean, that’s often my wonder when i lock these episodes…since they become time capsules of a singular conversations. But I seldom wonder it about the storytellers who inspire me the way Scorsese does.

So whether you saw this film in a theatre, on your couch, or not at all…welcome to the conversation. Pull up a chair and make yourself comfy.

    Thoughts From Your Host…

Never fails – the calendar turns to November and there is an absolute glut of films that merit discussing. Where are these works in August? Where!? Not only are we publishing shows once-a-week during this wonderful stretch, but there are titles that could easily make for good podcasts that we have to skip past since there is just no time!

    Welcome to late autumn, y’all

I always like having today’s guest on the show because she is somehing of a cinematic shrink. Katie has a way of leading me through a film that left me happy-but-with-questions and taking me on a deeper exploration of those ideas. Much like a shrink, she doesn’t always answer my questions…but instead turns the conversation in ways that let me find my own answers.

If only she’d bring a couch to these talks for me to stretch out on!

Time’s a-wastin’ – November and the Nazi Comedy await.

    Thoughts From Your Host…

This time four weeks ago, I said that October promised to be a rush – and lordy, was I ever on the mark. There have been travels, there have been feasts, there have been concerts, there have been friends and family galore!

The one thing there hasn’t been much of until these last few days is film! Don’t get me wrong, October was bountiful…but much of that bounty was kept away from us until the last week or so. It be’s that way sometimes.

As the month, the year, and the decade begin to draw to their close though, I see fun times ahead. There are a lot of films coming that I’m looking quite forward to talking about, and a lot of great guests I’m looking forward to catching up with.

As for the matter at-hand, I couldn’t be happier that we are able to close out the month discussing it…and that I was able to get the guest that I did. It’s the sort of “can you believe this…” sort of film that merits lengthy, spoiler-ific conversation. That sort of thing calls for one man and one man only.

    Let’s do this…

    20:22 The New Slang: JOKER

71:20 The Other Side: Lindsay and Ryan talk further reading after Todd Phillips’ new film

    Thoughts From Your Host…

Welcome back, everyone. September was a rush and October promises to be more of the same. But one can only surrender to the rush for so long before one needs to turn the mic back on.

So we return to the matter at-hand…and in this case “the matter at hand” seems to have been discussed for the entire time we’ve been on break! From the moment the film in this episode debuted at TIFF up until this very moment it has been the source of much hand-wringing, preaching, pontificating, yelling, belitting, and all sorts of other “ings”.

Here we are ready to dig into it on-mic, a mere three days after it opened, and it already feels like we’re a year late to the discussion.

    Nevertheless, we carry forth.

    Links Mentioned on Episode 231:

One detail that didn’t make the edit was Lindsay’s suggestions of the best Joker comics that one could read instead of watching the new film. Those titles include A Death in The Family, Death of The Family, Lovers and Madmen, and The Killing Joke,

If “Publish a Podcast Episode at 3:30AM” was ever on one of my bucket lists, I can go ahead and scratch it off. That’s right folks – your gizmo is not playing tricks on you, this episode did publish in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

You see, one of the beauties of TIFF is that it has this whole programme that caters to those with a hunger for the strange, the unusual, the downright dark. Those sorts of folk tend to stay up well into the night.

So it was that on Sunday evening, a dear friend and I did just that!

As Sunday night creeps further and further into Monday morning, I bid you good evening and good day and give you another audio snapshot of my TIFF 19 adventures.

  • Wicked Little Town: TIFF 2019 pt. i

Happy Sunday from The Centre of The Cinematic Universe (at least for the next week).

It’s been a bit of a slow start to the goings-on for yours truly, with only four notches on my belt so far…however, it’s been wonderful seeing all of the usual suspects again and even several unusual suspects!

This festival has become a little like homecoming – a chance to see familiar faces again whether they are the artists on the stage and scree, or the lovely people sitting next to me…and they don’t get much lovelier than the gent on-deck for this first postcard.

Here’s what’s in store in WLT Part One…

    Thoughts From Your Host…

Late August is such a surreal time of the year.

Days can be swelteringly hot while nights are cold enough to demand a jacket. Cities seem to be only half-full while people flee for amusing getaways with fire pits and docks. All the while, the multiplex just sorta gives up on offering audiences anything of real value.

If summer is a party, Late August is the point where the DJ is playing The Smiths. All there is left to drink is peppermint schnapps and a single bottle of MGD. The living room is filled with people passed-out on couches, but the conversation is still going in the kitchen.

But before the party is over, we must gather, we must drink, and we must talk. The party is winding down, but we are still in it.

Autumn and all of it’s Oscar Bait can wait just a little longer – right now it’s time for summer’s end.

    Thoughts From Your Host…

Twelve years ago this week, I started this little movie-loving experiment. At first I relied on the written word, but in very short order the podcast you’re currently tuned into followed.

Time flies when you’re having fun!

Were it not for this passion project of mine, I likely never would have met today’s guest…or most of the voices that have joined me for more than 200 episodes. So many of those voices – and certainly the one you hear today – have had a profound impact on my life. It’s the craziest thing: I started talking to most of these people because of a shared passion, only to quickly learn that passion or no passion they were incredible people.

It seldom matters if we agree when we get together. It seldom matters if the movie we get together to watch and/or talk about is good. All that matters is that we all get together, and that we continue to get together.

So thanks to my guest for a great show and a great friendship. Thanks to anyone who has come to talk or come to listen. And thanks for a fantastic twelve years!

    Here’s to many more.

3:02 Know Your Enemy: Courtney Small

24:41 The New Slang: THE FAREWELL

58:50 The Other Side: Courtney and Ryan talk further reading after Lulu Wang’s new film

    Thoughts From Your Host…

This is the sort of film I most want to podcast about.

It’s a movie that doesn’t have a whole lot of exposure just yet. Specifically, it’s playing on just 135 venues in North America – by comparison, the newest Tarantino film is playing in more than 3500.

It’s a movie that speaks directly to a specific culture, and yet has so damned many universal themes.

And it’s a movie that gave my guest and I so very much to think about, and left us feeling so much joy and heartache in equal measures.

THE FAREWELL has been prompting people like Simu Liu to buy out cinemas and offer people a chance to see it for free just to get the box office up…and I absolutely understand why. It’s a film that won’t get a whole lot of advertising on your TV or in the sidebar of the websites you browse. And yet, I wager that if you gave it a go, you’d come away from it feeling truly affected in all of the ways good cinema affects us most.

I’m always thankful that anyone tunes into this show at all, given how many other movie podcasts are out there talking about much bigger films. Today, I’m extra grateful, considering how much I want to spread the word on this particular film.

    81:30 “Brother to The Night”

    Thoughts From Your Host…

Knowing that “Big Little Lies” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” both air on Sunday nights make me really happy that this podcast posts on a Monday morning. How the heck do any of us face Monday mornings coming away from all of that dark lunacy?

There’s a lot going on in this episode. There are dark confessions, there is confused reaction, there are sexy sentences, and there is a lot of laughter. All of these things are qualities that my guest has brought into our friendship over the few short years I have known her…and for all of that I am deeply thankful. What’s more, I’m thankful that you fine folks get to hear even a bit of that on-mic.

As for the topic at-hand…well…it’s a weird topic. This movie that has dropped into the middle of our summer is many things to many people. Some will call it a garbage fire, some will call it genius. Some will leave the cinema in repulsion, some will shrug and be ambivalent. All of these reactions are valid, but no matter which reaction one has…one must admit…this film leaves a lot to be discussed.

To that end – to steal a detail from a great television comedy – we got y’all.
