  • Where Does Attitude Come From? What Every Coach Needs to Understand

Attitude is the wild card in athletic performance. But where does it actually come from?

In our last video, we broke down the formula for individual human performance: inherent attributes (what's in your DNA), acquired attributes (what you can learn, given time), and attitude. A good attitude can raise performance. A bad one can drag it down. In this episode of the Mental Edge, Coach Al explains where attitude starts, and why that matters for every coach.

    In this video:

Attitude comes from three places: an athlete's expectations, their values and beliefs, and their self-concept, where all of it is stored.

An athlete will only behave in line with their self-concept. That self-concept has three parts: self-image, self-ideal, and self-esteem.

All of it is learned. That means a coach can help change it.

This is more than a rah-rah speech or a pat on the back. The self-image is the athlete's master program. To change the program, you have to give it new language.

Coaches, what have you seen shape your athletes' attitudes? Drop it in the comments. I read them.

  • Mental Toughness Through the Ages: 4 Lessons from History for Jiu-Jitsu Athletes | The Mental Edge

What separates athletes who perform under pressure from those who fall apart when things get hard?

Mental toughness, focus, and visualization can sound like modern ideas. They aren’t. People have been training the mind for more than 2,000 years. In this episode of The Mental Edge, Coach Al walks through four lessons from history, connects each one to what modern sports science suggests, and shows how to apply them to your jiu-jitsu training right away.

    In this episode:

    • The Stoics (Epictetus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius): stop spending energy on what you can’t control. Your opponent, your bracket, and the referee aren’t yours. Your preparation, effort, and response are.
    • Eastern martial arts traditions: train your attention. Breathing and present-moment focus can help you stay on grips, balance, and the exchange in front of you, not the scoreboard or the crowd.
    • The ancient Greeks: develop body and mind together. Mental rehearsal of a takedown, done alongside physical drilling, can support skill development.
    • The Roman military: mental skills need repetition. Five minutes of focused mental practice a day is a practical place to start.

Mental toughness isn’t pretending you’re never afraid. It’s the ability to stay focused and respond well when things get difficult, and that ability can be trained.

  • Talent + Skill Ɨ Attitude: The Coaching Formula for Individual Performance

Coach, what are you actually trying to accomplish?

Most coaches say winning, development, or confidence. Coach Al argues that underneath all of those is one goal: getting the most out of each individual athlete. In this episode he breaks down a simple formula that explains where individual performance comes from, and why most coaches overlook the part that matters most.

(Internal Attributes + Acquired Attributes) Ɨ Attitude = Individual Human Performance

    In this episode:

    • Internal attributes: the natural gifts an athlete is born with, like strength, power, and dexterity. You can’t change these.
    • Acquired attributes: everything an athlete can learn, including technique, tactics, drills, and strategy.
    • Attitude, the multiplier: why a poor attitude drags down even a talented, well-coached athlete, and why a strong one can lift an average athlete far beyond their physical gifts (think Rudy).
    • Why attitude is the one factor that can change right now, for better or worse.

Whether you coach soccer, football, baseball, jiu-jitsu, or any other sport, this formula gives you a practical lens for your day-to-day coaching. Upcoming episodes dig into where attitude comes from and how to develop it in your athletes.

  • Why Talented Athletes Choke Under Pressure | The Mental Blind Spot

Why do talented athletes perform exceptionally well in practice but struggle when competition day arrives?

You've spent countless hours developing your technique, improving your conditioning, and preparing for competition. But when the pressure is on, something changes. You hesitate, second-guess yourself, and make mistakes you rarely make during training.

In this episode of The Mental Edge, Professor Al Hogan explains The Mental Blind Spot—the often-overlooked gap between physical preparation and mental performance training.

Many athletes have a structured plan for developing their physical abilities but no systematic approach to building confidence, focus, emotional control, and mental toughness.

In this video, we'll explore three areas where the Mental Blind Spot can hold athletes back:

    • Performance Inconsistency: Why athletes struggle to execute techniques under competition pressure.
    • Emotional Volatility: How frustration, anxiety, and mistakes can disrupt performance.
    • Identity Limitations: How negative beliefs and self-image can prevent athletes from reaching their potential.

Whether you compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, MMA, or another sport, understanding these mental barriers is an important step toward performing more consistently.

Your physical preparation develops your ability. Your mental preparation helps you use that ability when it matters most.

  • Your Self Image May Be Controlling Your Performance

Ever wonder why you perform great during Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training but struggle to bring that same confidence and skill to competition?

The problem may not be your technique, conditioning, or preparation. It could be the way you see yourself as an athlete.

In this episode of The Randori Edge, Professor Al Hogan explores how self-image, limiting beliefs, and past experiences influence your performance on the mat. You'll discover why talented athletes sometimes hesitate under pressure, how negative beliefs can become self-fulfilling, and why improving your mental game is just as important as developing your physical skills.

You'll also learn the three principles of the Identity Forge System — Recognize, Reshape, and Reinforce — and how to use them to build a stronger athletic identity, develop confidence through deliberate practice, and perform closer to your true potential.

Whether you're a recreational grappler, competitive BJJ athlete, or coach, this episode will challenge you to rethink what's holding you back.

Your past performance doesn't define your potential.

  • The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu | The Randori Mental Edge

Every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete faces obstacles. Tough opponents, frustrating losses, injuries, and techniques that just don't seem to click. But what if the biggest obstacle isn't what's happening on the mat, but how you're thinking about it?

In this episode of The Randori Mental Edge, Professor Al Hogan explains how the way you approach challenges can make a difference in your performance.

Whether you're a white belt struggling to improve or a seasoned competitor preparing for your next tournament, learning to see obstacles as challenges rather than threats can change how you train, compete, and respond to setbacks.

You'll learn the difference between a threat mindset and a challenge mindset, why your thoughts can work against you under pressure, and three simple questions you should ask yourself after every difficult training session or competition.

Remember, champions aren't athletes who never face obstacles. They're athletes who learn to use those obstacles to get better.
