Amy Carmichael was born in 1867 in Ireland.  At the age of 27, she went to India as a missionary and spent 55 years rescuing girls, especially temple children.  They were young girls dedicated to the gods and forced into prostitution to earn money for the priests.  

Some volunteers know a great deal about Mercy Ships before they sign up.  Others don’t.  Amber Smid was in the second category.

Hailey Richman volunteers with Puzzles to Remember.  It’s a nonprofit that provides puzzles to facilities that serve patients with cognitive impairment.

Agnes and Joseph Biney are from Ghana, and they have served onboard our hospital ships for many years. 

Azzam was a Muslim pirate in Somalia.  He told his imam that he had dreams about Jesus, and the man beat him.  His mother told him to leave home for his own safety.  But his father located him and sent him a package.  Shocking!  It contained his mother, cut up into small pieces plus a photo of her kneeling in front of her two killers.

Antonio was a hard-working farmer in Honduras.  He didn’t expect trouble as he opened the door.  Gang members burst into the room!  They shot and killed him, and wounded his wife Paula in the stomach and ankle.

Mercy Ships works to save lives in the FUTURE by offering medical capacity-building programs to the countries we serve.  And we work to save lives NOW by offering free surgery. 

In 1942, Hitler herded hundreds of thousands of Jews into a 16-block area in Poland called the Warsaw Ghetto. 

It’s a great compliment to Mercy Ships when volunteers return to give more time to serving the poor in Africa.  

Mercy Ships wants to help change the story for the “bottom billion” of the world’s population.  Most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and have no access to safe, timely and affordable surgery.
