  • (S1:E55) Transitions and Identity with Jack Sterling's
Jack Sterling Greenville, South Carolina, United States | Entrepreneur | Navy SEAL Veteran | Communications Security Consultant
"After spending almost a decade solving kinetic and strategic communications problems around the world, my "why" is now helping businesses develop security-centric strategies to thrive in an increasingly high-threat environment. Threats we help address: internet outages, ransomware, active shooters, insider threats, IP theft, digital vandalism, phishing emails, terror attacks, physical theft, natural disaster, and compliance requirements. The internet is just a new medium for criminals, terrorists, and hostile nation-states to conduct their nefarious business. The threat posed to the business world, and the world at large, is dire and growing like wildfire. If your business doesn't have a unified, documented & practiced security plan, then luck is part of your defense."
Teams all work under the same banner but speak different languages, draw from different budgets, have different priorities. In the gaps between these silos, vulnerabilities exist. We identify the gaps, measure the total attackable surface & prescribe strategic solutions as appropriate.
    My Top 5 Values:
    1. Curiosity
    2. Integrity
    3. Tenacity
    4. Humility
    5. Humor
    My Gallup Top 5 Strengths:
    1. Input - I have a thirst for new knowledge, which helps as I spend ~50% of my working time learning about the threat & supplier landscape (so my clients don't have to)
    2. Restorative - MOST businesses are mess and semi-broken; I seek to find remedies
    3. Intellection - Maybe my biggest weakness, but I'm more adapt at grasping the conceptual big picture vs the ground-level nitty gritty details (that is where our supplier partners excel!)
    4. Context - Knowing the "why" driving your business is essential when developing strategy to keep you going. Without context, we're just going from putting one fire out to the next.
    5. Harmony - The world is full of conflict, both internal and external. I use this strength to ID the most harmful conflict areas and bring some resolution.

  • Nightmare vs Nightwear
Upon his return from deployment, SFC (retired) Patrick Skluzacek said the nightmares started. “I was scared of closing my eyes.. “I'd wake up thrashing and sweating and the Veterans Affairs didn't have a cure for it. They just had people with nightmares, people killing themselves, and they didn't understand why." Tyler Skluzacek, Patrick’s, the 27-year-old son told CNN, “I was just 13 when he came back from Iraq, but I knew he was a completely different person. He used to be so active and happy. After the war, he was just depressed, lethargic, irritable, and the worst part is he wasn't sleeping. It was hard seeing my Dad like that." Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, his father had nightmares that haunted him for years.
