Ostrolenk speaks with Jan Winhall, author of “Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model: A Bottom-Up Approach" (https://www.amazon.com/Treating-Trauma-Addiction-Sense-Polyvagal/dp/0367408120). Winhall details her history with treating trauma and addiction and how she came to understand addiction not as a disease but as a means of coping with trauma. Addition occurs, Winhall explains, naturally when individuals do not feel safe and are unable to socially engage. We also live in cultures that do not support engagement and grounding, which is further detailed within the five stages of oppression in Winhall’s book. Lastly, Ostrolenk and Winhall discuss practices for transitioning out of fight, flight or freeze states to grounded self-regulated and socially engaged states.

Ostrolenk speaks with Dr. Thomas R. Verny, a psychiatrist, writer, lecturer, and academic. Dr. Verny is the founder of PPPANA (now APPPAH), served as its President from 1983 to 1991. Verny was founding editor of the Pre- and Peri-Natal Psychology Journal of which he is presently Associate Editor. Dr. Verny is author of The Secret Life of the Unborn Child with John Kelly, Pre-Parenting with Pamela Weintraub. In total, he has written eight books including the recently published The Embodied Mind and over 47 scientific papers. Dr. Verny discusses what inspired him to pursue a career in Pre- and Peri-Natal Psychology, including clients’ accounts of early memories that called into question mainstream thinking on the topic. Dr. Verny also details the disproportionate medical focus on the brain, while memories are also held throughout our body. Greater focus on the rest of the body will improve our capacity to understand and treat disease, introspection, and – ultimately – our free will.

Ostrolenk speaks with Dr. Cherionna Menzam-Sills, student and educator of Pre- and Perinatal Psychology/Therapy, Continuum (a mindful movement practice), and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy globally. Dr. Menzam-Sills has authored two books, The Breath of Life: An Introduction Craniosacral Biodynamics and, recently, Spirit into Form: Exploring Embryological Potential and Prenatal Psychology.

Dr. Menzam-Sills opens with what led her to explore alternative methods of healing and the role that intuition played in guiding her towards Pre- & Perinatal Psychology. Dr. Menzam-Sills developed her own education path and was influenced by the work of many, including William Emerson and Ray Castellino, and Continuum founder, Emilie Conrad. Through her work, Dr. Menzam-Sills has guided patients through deconstructing past contractions and rebuilding. She draws on body work to help induce a state that allows them to go back to their pre- and post- birth experiences and details the importance of a field of safety and cellular memory.

Ostrolenk speaks to professional photographer Beau Simmons and Army Rangers Dan Blakeley and Tom Amenta about their new book “The Twenty-Year War: A Photo Journal Dedicated to Veterans of the Global War on Terror and Their Stories.”

In the book, American combat veterans open up about their military service, the hard realities of combat, their transitions post-military, and what it’s like to find purpose and create new lives.

In the interview they discuss what it was like to create the book which included visiting 42 states in 61 days, traveling 16,000 miles. The book includes 71 unique veteran voices. The conversation is wide ranging and includes Dan discussing three phases of leaving military service which include Phase one: Out of the Fight; Phase two: No Uniform, Now What?; and Phase three: Self-Reflection. He acknowledges, though, that this is not necessarily everyone’s path. Beau speaks of his learning to move beyond the self and serving something bigger than oneself as a result of the road trips to visit the 71 vets. Tom discusses his inner work to help heal from combat.

The interview also includes a discussion on taboo topics, the need for tribe, and invisible wounds. They also discuss specific interviews and what they meant to each of the three creators. They end the conversation with the lessons they want the listening audience and hopeful book buyers to take away from the book.
