Hello and Welcome to the Microbiome Maverick Podcast, the only place where microbiome science meets real-world applications. I am your host Dr. Amine zorgani, a microbiome expert. My goal is to make microbiome science a common knowledge for everyone as for me microbiome equals health!
Today, I have the pleasure to speak to Pierre Cressard, the President of Nahibu, a French gut microbiome testing and research company.
In this episode, we discussed with Pierre how gut microbiome testing is a useful tool for managing overall health by monitoring the diversity of the microbiome and preventing its loss. The diversity of the gut microbiome is linked with various functions, including the gut-brain connection, and the loss of diversity can have a negative impact on human health.
We also looked at how the composition of the gut microbiome is unique to each individual and can be affected by various factors, including diet, lifestyle, and exposure to pollution. Understanding the composition of the microbiome and personalizing nutritional approaches and supplements can help to improve health outcomes.
Finally, we discussed how the use of metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatics can provide a precise image of the composition of the microbiome, and the data gathered from microbiome testing can be used to cluster the microbiome, understand the pathways inside it, and differentiate between different clusters. This information can be used to develop personalized nutrition plans and prevent health concerns.
Enjoy the episode, and please follow and share! Happy to hear your thoughts and stay positive!

11 years ago, I was visited by my PhD supervisor in my laboratory office. He had in his possession a tome of considerable thickness. I was under the impression that it pertained to small bacterial RNAs, which was the main focus of my research at the time. However, as he handed me the book, the title read "Probiotics and Prebiotics". I was taken aback and inquired as to its content. He replied, "This is the future of health and medicine, and you must read it."
At the time, I was engaged in developing next-generation antibiotics that utilised microbial genetics as a tool. My end goal was the eradication of pathogenic bacteria. The book on probiotics and prebiotics represented the antithesis of my work. Despite this, my curiosity was piqued, and I delved deeper and deeper into microbiome research. I came across a paper that detailed how antibiotics caused gut dysbiosis by killing off bacteria. Gut dysbiosis plays a key role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and diabetes type 1 and 2, to name a few. Microbiome dysbiosis can be caused by host-specific factors such as genetic background, health status (infections, inflammation), and lifestyle habits or—more importantly—environmental factors such as diet (high sugar, low fibre), xenobiotics (antibiotics, drugs, food additives), and even hygiene. If left unaddressed, all this can lead to the extinction of our microbiomes.
The Microbiome Mavericks audiobook serves as an educational tool to raise public awareness of the steps being taken to mitigate the extinction of our microbiomes. The audiobook is the result of several interviews with microbiome biotech founders and prominent researchers in the field. They share their insights on protecting our microbiomes and improving our health.
Within this audiobook, you'll discover exciting research being conducted in far-reaching places such as space and the depths of the ocean. You'll gain insight into the wonders of our skin, gut, and vaginal microbiomes. You'll learn how microbes can enhance the gut of athletes and improve the health of babies through breast milk. We'll take you on a journey to discover the newest technologies used to mine our gut microbiomes and improve our health. You'll also learn about the latest breakthrough research in fecal microbiota transplantation, mental health, and obesity.
I hope you'll enjoy the Microbiome Mavericks audiobook as much as I did when interviewing all of the Microbiome Mavericks. These founders are rewriting the rules of medicine and health.

Have you ever wondered how space affects the human body? Do you know that astronauts have to deal with a lot of health issues due to space travel? From muscle and bone loss to weakened immune systems, the human body undergoes several changes in space. But have you ever thought about how space affects the microbiome?
Joseph (Sci) Borg, a professor at the University of Malta, was intrigued by this question and decided to investigate it further. He, along with his team, decided to conduct a unique experiment - they sent skin microbiome samples to the International Space Station (ISS) and back with SpaceX three times! But why did they do that?
Let's dive into the fascinating world of microbiome and the impact of space on these microorganisms with Prof. Joseph ‘Sci” Borg.

The skin microbiome is a term that has been making waves in the skincare industry over the past few years. It refers to the collection of microorganisms that live on the surface of our skin, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. While the idea of "good bacteria" on the skin may seem counterintuitive, these microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining skin health and protecting against harmful pathogens.
So why is the skin microbiome a game-changer for the cosmetic industry? Well, it turns out that the composition of the skin microbiome can have a significant impact on the health and appearance of our skin. Research has shown that imbalances in the skin microbiome can contribute to a variety of skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and rosacea. On the other hand, a healthy and diverse skin microbiome can help to prevent these conditions and promote overall skin health.
One company that is at the forefront of skin microbiome research is Gallinée. Founded by French pharmacist Marie Drago, Gallinée has developed a range of skincare products that are specifically designed to support and nourish the skin microbiome.
The skincare industry is constantly evolving, with new trends and technologies emerging every year. However, one trend that is rapidly gaining momentum is skin microbiome testing. This cutting-edge technology promises to revolutionize the way we approach skincare, by providing personalized insights into the health of our skin microbiome.
So why is skin microbiome testing the next big thing in skincare someone might ask? According to Dr. Elsa Jungman, it all comes down to personalization. Just as we all have unique fingerprints, we also have unique skin microbiomes. By testing the composition of our skin microbiome, we can gain insights into which bacterial strains are most beneficial for our skin, and which are causing imbalances or skin conditions.
So let’s hear from Dr. Elsa Jungman a skincare expert who is at the forefront of the skin microbiome testing movement.
From the playground to the Olympics, athletes of all levels know that the right training and nutrition can make all the difference in their performance. But what if there was another factor at play that could give them an even greater edge? Enter the microbiome.
So, how exactly does the microbiome impact athletic performance? It all comes down to the gut. The gut microbiome, which includes trillions of microorganisms living in the digestive tract, plays a key role in nutrient absorption, immune function, and inflammation. And according to Jonathan Scheiman, founder of Fitbiomics, the gut microbiome also play a critical role in athletic performance.
But is this just for athletes? Or can you and I also enjoy the benefits of the athletic gut microbiome? Let’s hear from Jonathan
