Earlier this week Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael were joined by NFL Insider for SiriusXM and Fox Sports Radio, Adam Caplan, who among other topics spoke about Julio Jones contract and how the Atlanta Falcons could restructure the star wide receiver’s contract to help get under the cap.
“Julio’s got three years left. They could take his base salary of $15.3 Million and convert that to a signing bonus and spread it out over five years and they could lower his cap number by $10 Million easily because his cap number is over $23 Million, which is really high.” Caplan said when asked how the Falcons could restructure Julio’s contract.
“The reason why teams don’t like doing that with older players is guys who have an injury history like Julio Jones, he just turned 32 years old, if a guy retires early and I’m not saying Julio is, but if he decides to retire over the next couple of years if they trade or cut him…there is a significant amount of dead money that’s left on the cap and you want be careful of doing this with older players. You like to restructure with younger players who you know you never have to worry about whether they are going to not be on the team or not,” Caplan continued.
