Sam Stovall told Mike Hosking amazingly, it only takes about four months after these declines for the market to break even again.

The parents of a 22-year-old man who died after he used synthetic drugs, have teamed up with an Auckland MP to push for tougher penalties for those who supply the toxic substances.

Calum Jones died at his family home in Henderson in September.

West Harbour man Jonathan Gordon has been charged with supplying a psychoactive substance, and is back in court this week.

Calum Jones' father Lewis is supporting National MP Simeon Brown's private members Bill before parliament.

"We would like to see someone step forward and actually improve the consequences to stop a lot of the underground manufacturing of these synthetic products and something done from a class C to class A."

There is concern about the Queen's flock of swans at Windsor, after 20 have died from bird flu.

Around the same number are very sick and in the process of dying.

Seven of the dead birds were taken away for testing and five of them tested positive for avian influenza.

The Queen's Marker of the Swans, David Barber told Mike Hosking he's been told the disease will gradually die out after a couple of weeks, but says it's still concerning.

"It is a worry to us, we are losing swans which the public love here they are classed as royal birds and it is in a very important place."

Barber says tourists from all over the world go to Windsor to look at the swans.

Calls for schoolkids to be taught more about Waitangi Day.

Auckland University Maori Studies professor Margaret Mutu says a poor understanding of history is part of the reason Maori are still so badly represented in some statistics.

She told Chris Lynch people would want to do more to solve the problem, if they were taught New Zealand history from an early age.

"It's the sort of thing you need to be introducing into primary schools, so every New Zealander understands the founding document of this country."

Kiwis are eating less meat than we used to.

The average New Zealander is eating on average 20 kilos less meat a year than a decade ago.

Lady Butcher owner Hannah Miller told Mike Hosking people are still eating meat regularly just not as much.

"Price is still definitely the main contributing factor. I don't think really it's a heath thing as far as meat but I would say people are generally eating a smaller portion size."

Miller says she's seen a change from quantity to quality.

There's plenty of optimism from our Prime Minister as she prepares to enter the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Jacinda Ardern will be officially welcomed to the upper marae this morning, rather than at Ngapuhi's historic Te Tii marae.

She told Mike Hosking there is a focus on building new relationships.

"From certainly the feedback I've had is that Andrew Little's making good progress. Of course, he is a new minister as well so needing to reform those relationships as a new minister with Ngapuhi and working through but everyone seems very optimistic about what's possible there."

There's nothing new in a divided Ngapuhi, and the location of the Waitangi powhiri isn't going to change anything.

Some Ngapuhi elders are disappointed today's official Crown welcome isn't happening at Te Tii Marae.

Instead, politicians are being received this morning on the upper Treaty Grounds.

Waitangi organising committee chair Chair Pita Paraone says a powhiri is meant to be peaceful and respectful, not political.

"It's not about presenting our visitors with what are really political issues."
