Australia's Prime Minister won't be enjoying increased pressure over the Manus Island situation but he's continuing his hard-line policy.

The NZ Government is offering $3 million through its overseas development aid budget to look after the refugees.

Jacinda Ardern's offer for New Zealand to take 150 of the asylum seekers remains - but Malcolm Turnbull still hasn't accepted it.

Australian political analyst, Geoffrey Hawker told Mike Hosking a deal with the US to resettle the refugees is happening very slowly.

"The trouble is with that strategy, if it's a strategy. A month or two months from now it won't look so good if it isn't actually proceeding."

He said Mr Turnbull is continuing his hard-line policy.

"He's got slings and arrows all around him and he I am sure, much as he must love New Zealand, as we all do, he must feel he doesn't want this."

Human rights activists in the Philippines hope Jacinda Ardern's had even a slight hint of positive influence over the Philippines President.

Rodrigo Duterte's been leading a war on drugs in his country with thousands killed.

Cristina Palabay is the Secretary-General of the Alliance For the Advancement of People's Rights in the Philippines.

She told Mike Hosking she's hoping pressure from the likes of our Prime Minister may help the Philippines President rethink his strategy.

"He has acted upon international pressure in the past including that of continuing peace talks."

Claims our agricultural and energy industries need more innovation to better combat global warming.

The most recent Climate Change Performance Index placed New Zealand 33rd of 60 countries on how we're responding to global warming.

New Climate Institute of New Zealand Founding Partner, Doctor Niklas Hohne said half of our greenhouse gas emissions are coming from agriculture.

He said there's been little improvement to the industry's environmental impacts for decades.

"New Zealand has quite high per capita emissions and they have not changed since 1990. So you have to reduce the energy related emissions and also the agriculture related emissions."

Hohne said we've got our work cut out for us in making our Paris Accord commitments.

"What New Zealand now has to do is to figure out a plan [of] how to reduce the emissions to zero. that's the real challenge going to zero."

The numbers will be vital, when the results of Australia's marriage equality vote come back.

It's a non-binding postal survey, so there's nothing compelling the government to change the law in the event of a 'yes' vote.

Australian religious leader Father Rod Bower told Mike Hosking a slim 'yes' majority will lend credibility to politicians looking to vote the other way.

''50.1% would be a win, but I think that would make it more politically difficult for the Prime Minister. He has a very difficult time with the extreme right of his party.''

A leading advocate for extending parental leave would prefer additional leave for fathers.

It comes after National tried to amend the government's bill to allow both parents to spend 13-weeks of paid leave, rather than just one for the full 26-weeks.

26 For Babies Convener, Rebecca Mathews said additional time off for fathers would be better.

However, she told Mike Hosking all evidence suggests 26-weeks in a row with one parent, is better than two over 13 weeks.

"For secure attachment, for exclusive breastfeeding, for all of those things and also the alternative in terms of going out into early childhood education."

A yes vote on marriage equality is no guarantee of a law change in Australia.

It's been a sleepless night for "yes" supporters, even with the polls in their favour.

Australia correspondent Murray Olds said the Prime Minister hopes to get a law change in by Christmas in the event of a yes vote.

But he told Mike Hosking there are still hurdles to cross after the results come back.

''There is a small rump of conservatives in the coalition party room, and they don't want a bar of it. They want to delay, they want more protections.''
