We've got apps for travel, food and even dating now there's one for babysitting.

An Auckland mother is building an app for parents, which would enable them to book a local sitter using their phone.

The app called, Sitterzen, lets parents endorse babysitters they trust.

Founder Jane Haagh told Mike Hosking it's not easy for parents to find reliable sitters, and recommendations go a long way.

"Not everyone have family in town where they live and not everybody knows a sitter and what we're trying to do is replicate what's happening naturally in the community."

ACT leader David Seymour says it's a blessing to be outside the coalition talks with Winston Peters.

The New Zealand First leader says progress is being made, and he's sticking to his Thursday deadline to form a new government.

But Mr Seymour is labelling Mr Peters a charismatic crook, and thinks the upcoming Parliamentary term will be a train wreck.

He says [told Mike Hosking] he's not Kim Jong-un - so he can't win every election...but he is ready for a Winston collapse.

"People are going to be pretty pleased that ACT option still available on the ballot paper because we've actually shown been a reliable partner in government that does good things without being too up ourselves."

Seymour said he's can't win every election as he's not Kim Jong-Un.

A researcher for Otago University is hoping to find a way to stop cancer spreading.

Currently nine out out ten cancer deaths are caused by the spread, or the metastasising of the disease, to other parts of the body.

Dr Aniruddha Chatterjee said said once doctors understand how cancer spreads, they can begin to find a way to stop it.

"Within in five years I hope we have a good idea of what those switches are that lead from primary cancer to metastatic cancer."

Chatterjee's studying the spread of melanoma and bowel cancers, because New Zealand has high rates of both.

He said the research should be complete within five years.

"From that point onwards we'll be able to design intervention and therapies that might be able to target them."

A swipe at the Greens' negotiating tactics, from caretaker Prime Minister Bill English.

Both National and Labour go into their second coalition discussion meetings with New Zealand First today.

But the Greens remain on the sidelines despite their pre-election deal with Labour.

Mr English told Mike Hosking New Zealand First is using its position to achieve a number of things.

He said they're certainly using their position more effectively than the Greens.

"New Zealand First are using their position to achieve a number of things, which I don't think too many of them would be a surprise to people. They're certainly using their position more effectively than the Greens, a bit hard to tell what's going on there."

Former Labour Party president Mike Williams is dismissing the idea we need formal rules for future coalition discussions.

The serious talking has only just started, more than two weeks on from the election.

Williams said other western countries actually take a lot longer to negotiate.

He told Mike Hosking people need to get a grip.

"In other countries it takes a hell of a lot longer. Belgium for example, actually had no government during the global financial crisis and survived it better than almost anyone else."

However former Labour Cabinet Minister, Richard Prebble said we need rules around MMP, to stop minor parties ending up with all the power.

He said New Zealand First is currently calling the shots while Labour and National court his support to get into office.

Mr Prebble said one way to control minor parties would be to force them to have all their policies costed by Treasury.

"Send it to the Treasury and cost it and we will quickly discover that a number of them are completely absurd."

Renewed calls from secondary teachers for schools to have gender neutral uniforms and toilets.

The Post Primary Teachers Association wants the Ministry of Education to put guidelines in place protecting students of minority genders and sexualities.

PPTA's Rainbow Taskforce spokesperson Paul Stevens told Larry Williams schools around the world are dropping needless gender restrictions.

"I mean globally males are probably more likely to be wearing a skirt than actually trousers, in a lot of cultures that's quite normal. So I think what we are trying to say is that there's no reason why we have to be putting a demarcation on that."

American police aren't ruling out the possibility the Las Vegas gunman had an accomplice.

Stephen Paddock is responsible for the deaths of 58 people in Monday's shooting, with more than 500 injured.

US correspondent Richard Arnold said police chief Joe Lombardo has his doubts about the version of event's supplied by Paddock's girlfriend Marilou Danly.

"He doesn't put much stock into some of the things she's raised, when she had no awareness of anything that was going on."

Sheriff Lombardo says the gunman must have had some help at some point.
