  • Marama Fox: More research needed on vaping in NZ
UPDATED 9.58AM The Maori Party wants pilots and research done in New Zealand on vaping.
It wants taxpayers to subsidise the cigarette alternative in a bid to stamp out smoking.
Co-leader Marama Fox said there have been a lot of studies on vaping but most haven't been done in New Zealand and many have been inconclusive.
However, she told Mike Hosking there's been one five-year piece of research on it.
"That's produced very positive results around illnesses or lack of, and also the moving of people off the cigarettes," she said.
Fox said some statistics shows vaping is harm-reducing, not cancer-causing and that it's a good cessation tool that moves people off cigarettes.
She said people who are vaping will tell you it's been better on the pocket, they're having greater success and are feeling better in their life.
"And so it is a bit of a movement, but you're right, there is a lot of variable data, and we want to move carefully along this line."

The Mt Albert MP is expected to be elected Labour's Deputy Leader next week.
Massey University political commentator Grant Duncan told Mike Hosking Jacinda Ardern could take the limelight from her boss.
"She might come out ahead of Andrew in opinion polls as preferred Prime Minister, which would be interesting and a little bit embarrassing for the Labour Party.
"I would say that Andrew is probably aware that that could happen. He would have thought that through."

New Zealand Speleological Society president Murray Wilson told Mike Hosking you need to be experienced if you're going to tackle the deepest single drop in the country.
"It's not one that you'd want to go in as your first big abseil or first big cave, that's for sure."
Mr Wilson said the hole is 176-metre deep.
"The cave underneath, it's six or seven hours once you get down the bottom and that's not to be taken lightly either."

  • Mike Hutcheson: Declaring paid posts on social media
Australia's advertising watchdog is changing the way sponsored posts are displayed on social media.
The Australia Association of National Advertisers has changed their code of ethics so any person posting on social media with a product or service must declare they're getting paid for doing so.
Such a person would have to put #ad or #sponsored on their post when promoting a product or service.

Influencers must ensure any paid content is marked and cannot "Camouflage the fact that it is advertising".
Advertising consultant Mike Hutcheson told Mike Hosking he thinks it is a great idea and New Zealand should follow in Australia's footsteps.
