Kim Jong-un has got what he wanted from his meeting with Donald Trump.

The Singapore summit was the first time a sitting US president and a North Korean leader have ever met face to face.

Kim committed to the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

Columbia University Korea expert, Charles Armstrong, told Mike Hosking in return, he got the recognition his country has always craved.

"The North Koreans have wanted to be recognised as equal partners by the US for decades and now he has done that he can bring that home."

A penal reform organisation believes there's no option but to bowl part of Waikeria Prison.

Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis will deliver his verdict on the fate of the ageing jail this afternoon.

Howard League chief executive, Mike Williams told Mike Hosking the area that's known as the 'top prison' was built over 100 years ago.

"It was mothballed but then with the prison numbers rising parts of it are in use. What I would like to hear is that particular jail is bowled and replaced with something like a 500 bed modern jail."

China will want in on any further international relations involving North Korea.

US President Donald Trump will meet Kim Jong-un later today in Singapore for a historic meeting - although it's unclear what exactly North Korea wants out of it, other than a positive image.

Massey University senior lecturer Marc Lanteigne told Mike Hosking China will want to be part of things too.

"China is looking for first of all a security agreement that benefits their interest so in other words any kind of denuclearisation will also serve Chinese security interests and they will also want to play a role in any diplomacy that comes after it."

The Government's being urged to stop criminal behaviour before it starts by intervening early - even before a child is born.

A new report's been done by justice sector adviser Dr Ian Lambie.

He says targeting young children with social and mental health services is more effective and cheaper than prison or harsh punishments to reduce youth crime.

Lambie told Mike Hosking you have to identify and support families which are struggling, by focusing on children as early as infancy or even pre-birth.

"Comprehensive and evidence based parenting programmes, you need to look at the child's learning needs, behavioural difficulties and you need to intervene before the age of five."

Jacinda Ardern is defending Winston Peters' right to sue government agencies.

The soon to be Acting Prime Minister is taking legal action against the Ministry of Social Development and other parties, for alleged breach of privacy, over the leaking of details of his superannuation payment.

It comes as he prepares to take over from Ardern during her maternity leave.

She told Mike Hosking it's important to distinguish between Winston Peters the minister, and Winston Peters the person.

"It is a decision that he has made not as a minister, he made it before he even became Deputy Prime Minister that he was pursing this issues of privacy, it is a decision ultimately for him."

Scams are here to stay - so best be vigilant.

That's from The Centre for Financial Capability, after an online romance scammer stole almost $600,000 from a Kiwi pensioner.

Fraud education manager, Bronwyn Groot, is seeing higher numbers and more sophisticated scams targeting New Zealanders.

Groot says they target anyone from high school students, to business people, to the elderly and they're unlikely to disappear.

She says one thing we can do is stop blaming people for falling victim.

"We need to change the mentality of people saying 'oh god, they must be so blooming stupid to fall for it,"Groot said.

"We need to put the blame solely where it lays and realise how sophisticated they are and how much effort they put into getting this money."
