Marc Defant is a professor of geology at the University of South Florida who authored the 2025 paper "Evolutionary Psychology and the Crisis of Empirical Rigor in Feminist Studies," published in Sexuality & Culture. The paper critiques feminist studies for prioritizing ideology over empirical evidence, using evolutionalry psychology to challeng concepts like pariarchy, social constructionism, fat studies, rape theories, and ecofiminism. Defant argues these ideas often ignore biological ralities, such as sex differences in reproductive investment, and function more as political advocacy then rigorous scholarship. This episode with Thomas Speciale covers the controversy surrounding a press release published by the Democratic Party of Virginia just days before the 2022 midterm elections. Speciale alleges that the press release false portrayed him as a "notable insurrectionist who attacked the United States Capitol" and claimed he "bloodied and beat law enforcement," charges which he categorically denies. During this episode, Speciale outlines how he warned authorities of possible violence in advance and was present on January 6th attempting to prevent harm, not perpetrate it. Speciale discusses his efforts during discovery to prove that the press release was drafted, edited, and approved by Abigail Spanberger's campaign team, rather than independently by the party.
