  • Avi Loeb - Harvard Professor | Author: Extraterrestrial
Avi Loeb, Harvard Professor | Author: Extraterrestrial. The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth

Avi Loeb, chair of Harvard’s Department of Astronomy, believes that an alien visited in 2017 — and more are coming.
In his upcoming book, “Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), out Jan. 26, the professor lays out a compelling case for why an object that recently wandered into our solar system was not just another rock but actually a piece of alien technology.

The object in question traveled toward our solar system from the direction of Vega, a nearby star 25 light-years away, and intercepted our solar system’s orbital plane on Sept. 6, 2017.

On Sept. 9, its trajectory brought it closest to the sun. At the end of September, it blasted at about 58,900 miles per hour past Venus’ orbital distance, and then, on Oct. 7, it shot past Earth’s before “moving swiftly toward the constellation Pegasus and the blackness beyond,” Loeb writes in the book.

The object was first spotted by an observatory in Hawaii containing the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) — the highest-definition telescope on Earth.
The space object was dubbed ‘Oumuamua (pronounced “oh moo ah moo ah”), which is Hawaiian for — roughly — “scout.”

As space travelers go, it was relatively small at just about 100 yards long, but it was a big deal in the scientific community.

  • ¿El 2020 fue el año más cálido desde 1880? | Ahira Sánchez-Lugo

  • Uri Singer - Hollywood Director | Innovation & Resilience with the inventor of Freeband
    EPISODE 87!
Shortly after COVID-19 shut down L.A.’s greatest export, Hollywood movies and television, producer Uri Singer had to cancel the premiere of his new movie, Tesla, and stop production on his latest film. Despite the loss, Singer was more concerned about the safety of his cast and crew.

“The safest thing is to wash your hands,” said Singer. “That’s all the scientists, the doctor, everybody agrees and you have to wash your hands.”
Safety remains Singer’s biggest concern, so while production was shut down, he thought about how to bring it back safely on his sets. After all, it's not always possible to wash your hands after every interaction, especially if you’re shooting outside far from restrooms.

“Every time you leave home now, you have to remember to take your wallet, the keys, the cellphone, and now you have to bring your hand sanitizer and sometimes I forget,” said Singer.

Before becoming a producer, Singer worked as an inventor so he decided to get back to his roots and invent a device that would help people stay clean and safe, particularly crew that work for their hands-on Hollywood sets. That’s when he came up with Freeband, a hand sanitizer dispenser worn like a bracelet.

He called it the Freeband and connected with his friend Steve Gordon, a biotech entrepreneur, and worked together to take the product to market. For them, it’s not just about staying safe, but a psychological reminder to be socially responsible. @freebandusa @urisinger
