Although we're both from the same tone, it of course took the internet to bring us together. As you can tell from the title of this episode, despite everything that's going on with the current pandemic, we try to find the positive in all of it.
We talk about journaling and writing, the law of attraction, going with the flow and following your passion. Be yourself, do what you love, and surround yourself with amazing people. I always enjoy talking with Lindsey and I know you will too!
They say it's who you know, right? Darren started his company, DSM, over 13 years ago from his front porch. They're still going strong today thanks to the relationships he's built and being in the right place at the right time. You can feel it walking through his offices. You can hear it in the way he talks about his employees, his clients, and his community. It's why he does business locally. It all comes down to the people! Darren shares stories of how he met his core team, clients coming back to DSM, and employees growing up and getting married.
Lloyd is all about systems and processes - it's what he does for both himself and his clients. Before he started LWY Consulting, he did just fine trusting in his skills and his gut. But he quickly learned that to teach someone else and to build a scalable business, the process needed to be documented. We talk about how habits, routines, and automation save us time and help us make better decisions. Learn the skills you need to start your business on someone else's dime and when you launch, validate the market fast. Falling in love with an idea, finding your passion, and being in the zone are just a few of the topics we cover in building a scalable business.
"If it wasn't for my back pain I wouldn't have started [my company] and if it wasn't for BackerNation I wouldn't be in the spot I am today." As a content-centric company, Jay and I talk about the process of accumulating and communicating knowledge, expertise, and advice. He wasn't thrilled about the information that was available as he underwent 5 back surgeries over a period of 7 years. In learning for himself, he uncovered an opportunity to help others. We talk about how the creative process evolved for his team over the past 3 years and how it will continue to do so as they prepare to move BackerNation into the next phase of business.
Defunding terrorism was never the goal, but it's still a pretty awesome byproduct of what Mead and the mIQroTech team are up to. We spend a lot of time exploring what his company does and how it's changing the oil & gas industry. From there, we cover topics like presenting and pitching to different audiences. They just closed out another round of funding and Meade gives me a bit of what it was like behind the scenes of his TED Talk. Building a team, channeling creativity, adjusting to the market, and time management are just some of the things he's learned along the way. We wrap up this episode with a bit about mental health, a topic that's near and dear to my heart!
Matt and I dive into the art of telling a good story and how it's changed our lives. We talk about the importance of sticking to the basics and how habits and routines can help you better manage your time. Because time is precious, it's about balancing work and life and what you're passionate about as an entrepreneur. It's about enjoying the journey. Stick to what's important to you because we each have our own definition of success.
Fritz and I talk about how, for a lot of us, entrepreneurship is just a thing that sort of happens. We've thought about it, we've got a lot of great ideas, but eventually, something happens that just gives us the nudge we needed to start. It's a learning process and both you and your business evolve over time. As two (not so) process-driven guys, we talk about how structure has made us more creative and helped us overcome challenges in each of our own journeys.
