What happens when years of service, stress, addiction, and relentless pressure finally catch up with you?
In this powerful episode of The MisFitNation, we sit down with Chris Norris, MSW — General Manager & Lead Facilitator, Cognitive Fitness Coach for a raw conversation about military service, rock bottom, recovery, identity, and the practices that helped him rebuild his life from the inside out.
Chris spent 24 years supporting Naval Special Warfare operators in some of the most demanding environments imaginable. But while he was excelling professionally, alcohol addiction and accumulated stress were taking a serious toll behind the scenes. Eventually, a DUI, career consequences, and a moment of personal crisis forced him to face what could no longer be ignored.
That moment became the beginning of a different mission.
Chris shares how sobriety, mindfulness meditation, breathwork, endurance training, education, and cognitive restructuring helped him develop a new approach to resilience—one centered not on suppressing emotion or simply “toughing it out,” but on learning how to regulate stress, understand your internal state, and build healthier patterns over time.
In this episode, Chris breaks down the ideas behind cognitive fitness, including how breathwork can help shift the nervous system, why mindfulness is a trainable skill, how identity affects behavior, and what veterans can do when they leave the military and suddenly find themselves asking, “Who am I without the uniform?”
He also explains his practical STOP technique—Stop, Take a breath, Observe, Proceed mindfully—and why consistency matters more than chasing quick fixes.
