Mishlei 23:29-35 - Mishlei's Discourse on Wine (Part 1)

(כט) לְמִי אוֹי לְמִי אֲבוֹי לְמִי [מִדְיָנִים] (מדונים) לְמִי שִׂיחַ לְמִי פְּצָעִים חִנָּם לְמִי חַכְלִלוּת עֵינָיִם. (ל) לַמְאַחֲרִים עַל הַיָּיִן לַבָּאִים לַחְקֹר מִמְסָךְ. (לא) אַל תֵּרֶא יַיִן כִּי יִתְאַדָּם, כִּי יִתֵּן [בַּכּוֹס] (בכיס) עֵינוֹ יִתְהַלֵּךְ בְּמֵישָׁרִים. (לב) אַחֲרִיתוֹ כְּנָחָשׁ יִשָּׁךְ וּכְצִפְעֹנִי יַפְרִשׁ. (לג) עֵינֶיךָ יִרְאוּ זָרוֹת וְלִבְּךָ יְדַבֵּר תַּהְפֻּכוֹת. (לד) וְהָיִיתָ כְּשֹׁכֵב בְּלֶב יָם וּכְשֹׁכֵב בְּרֹאשׁ חִבֵּל. (לה) הִכּוּנִי בַל חָלִיתִי הֲלָמוּנִי בַּל יָדָעְתִּי מָתַי אָקִיץ אוֹסִיף אֲבַקְשֶׁנּוּ עוֹד.

Synopsis: This morning (1/9/23), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we tackled the WHOLE cluster of six pesukim about wine. Technically speaking, this is a continuation of last week's shiurim on Mishlei 23:29-30, but since we only have this one week left before break, we figured it would be best to get everything out on the table. After working through the translations, we developed a couple of promising approaches which we hope to continue developing tomorrow.

Mishlei 23:29-30 - Six Signs of a Mishleic Drinking Problem (Part 2)

(כט) לְמִי אוֹי לְמִי אֲבוֹי לְמִי [מִדְיָנִים] (מדונים) לְמִי שִׂיחַ לְמִי פְּצָעִים חִנָּם לְמִי חַכְלִלוּת עֵינָיִם. (ל) לַמְאַחֲרִים עַל הַיָּיִן לַבָּאִים לַחְקֹר מִמְסָךְ. 

Length: 40 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/5/23), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we took another stab at yesterday's pair of "riddle pesukim." We developed two approaches - one based on what we came up with yesterday, and another approach I came up with years ago. We poked around in some of the other meforshim afterwards, but most of them require the context of the remaining pesukim in the cluster. We DID, however, manage to find a commentary from an illustrious Rishon whom we have never learned on Mishlei before: the Ramban! He even gave us insight into the etymology of the English word "alcohol."

Synopsis: This morning (1/4/23), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began working on this "Mishleic riddle" which kicks off the final cluster of pesukim in the perek. We made some initial moves and read Metzudas David, but we ended by keeping things open. We'll see what the other meforshim have to say tomorrow, and it's possible we'll take three days on this couplet instead of the usual two.

NOTE: I MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE! Towards the end of today's shiur, I accidentally said "Shadal" when I really meant "Shagar," and I didn't realize it until after the recording stopped. (I think the slip of tongue had something to do with the fact that I'm in the middle of writing a Shadal-based article.) Because of this error, I gave the erroneous impression that Shadal is associated with post-modernism, which is NOT true. Shagar is the one who is associated with post-modernism. I hope this clears things up.

(כז) כִּי שׁוּחָה עֲמֻקָּה זוֹנָה וּבְאֵר צָרָה נׇכְרִיָּה.
(כח) אַף הִיא כְּחֶתֶף תֶּאֱרֹב וּבוֹגְדִים בְּאָדָם תּוֹסִף.

Synopsis: This morning (12/29/22), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed and refined our understanding of the derech nigleh of Mishlei 23:26-28 from yesterday, based on Rabbeinu Yonah. We then ventured into the derech nistar, guided by the Metzudas David.

Synopsis: This morning (12/28/22), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed Mishlei 23:26-27, we initially THOUGHT formed an independent unit, but subsequently realized should include 23:28 as well. After including pasuk 28 in our analysis we attempted to understand the trio of pesukim in accordance with the derech nigleh approach - first on our own, and then with Rabbeinu Yonah. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll try to understand them according to the derech nistar.

Synopsis: This morning (12/21/22), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we took up the last two pesukim in "the local cluster." These pesukim mention one of Mishlei's major tropes: guarding oneself against "strange women," which (obviously) is meant to be understood on both a literal (silver/nigleh) level and a metaphorical (gold/nistar) level. We raised the various questions and problems and started developing an approach today. We'll see what the meforshim say tomorrow.

Synopsis: This morning (12/20/22), in our morning Mishlei shiur, I made a last-minute decision to recap last night's findings on Rabbeinu Yonah. The recap ended up taking up most of shiur, and - to be honest - I think last night's version is better to listen to, and I'm only uploading this in case someone wants a 42 minute version instead of an 82 minute version. We ended with a teaser for Rabbeinu Yonah's approach to Mishlei 2:1-5, which he understands to be a step-by-step guide for acquiring chochmah. We decided that we'll devote the rest of the week to finishing the "local cluster" sugya in 23, then devote next week to "Rabbeinu Yonah on Chochmah."

Rabbeinu Yonah's Definition of Chacham (vs. Tzadik)

[גִּיל] (גול) יָגִיל אֲבִי צַדִּיק [וְיוֹלֵד] (יולד) חָכָם (וישמח) [יִשְׂמַח] בּוֹ.
בֶּן זוֹמָא אוֹמֵר, אֵיזֶהוּ חָכָם, הַלּוֹמֵד מִכָּל אָדָם

Length: 1 hour 22 minutes
Synopsis: Last night (12/19/22), in our Monday Night Mishlei Shiur, we were down to a skeleton crew. Instead of continuing in our chapter, we decided to examine Rabbeinu Yonah's definition of chacham, in light of his commentary on this morning's pasuk (23:24). We began with a review of OUR definitions of chacham vs. tzadik, which have been developed over the past two decades of Mishlei learning and are rooted in Rabbi Moskowitz's approach. We then read Rabbeinu Yonah's commentaries on Mishlei 23:24 and Avos 4:1 and attempted to synthesize a unified definition. We managed to do so, with the exception of one sticky point which we left aside. All in all, it was a productive evening, and I'm confident that this will prove to be a good investment for our future learning of Rabbeinu Yonah.

Mishlei 23:24-25 - Joyous Parents of Righteous and Wise Children

[גִּיל] (גול) יָגִיל אֲבִי צַדִּיק [וְיוֹלֵד] (יולד) חָכָם (וישמח) [יִשְׂמַח] בּוֹ. יִשְׂמַח אָבִיךָ וְאִמֶּךָ וְתָגֵל יוֹלַדְתֶּךָ:

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (12/19/22), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we encountered yet another pair of generic sounding "parents directing their kids to mussar" pesukim. After raising our questions as usual and exploring a few avenues, we decided to jump into the meforshim today. Several of the approaches we read didn't look particularly fruitful, but we encountered what seems to be a fundamental Rabbeinu Yonah. Tomorrow we'll revisit that Rabbeinu Yonah before moving on to the next set of pesukim.
