It was a dream come true to finally get to meet Marion Boyce, costume designer for Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Her fabulous pieces on the show add depth to the characters and visual harmony to the sets, making us feel like we were having our cake and eating it too.
In February 2020, Mary got to sit down with Marion in her fabulous Melbourne studio and learn what it was like working on MFMM. As we suspected, no detail went unexamined in creating costumes for the show!
Here are some shots from her studio:
Below is the coat we discuss that was made from Marion’s vintage Chanel fabric and seen in Dead Air:

Back in November of 2018, Jo Jo and Mary were extras in the ballroom scene on “Crypt of Tears.” That night we recorded our experiences from the very long and exhilarating day we had on set. Now that the movie is out, we can FINALLY share this recording with you! Please be advised: we were sooooo loopy from a 15-hour filming day, so this recording is very raw and free form. There are also swears.
Huge thanks to Every Cloud for making sure our experience was wonderful. Every single crew member we came into contact with that day was incredibly kind and helpful—and with 60 extras on set, it cannot have been easy! We are also incredibly grateful to the people who contributed to our own Go Fund Me. You enabled us to have an incredible experience, and we hope that this gives you a taste of what it was like to be on set. We were thrilled to be part of the making of this movie, even if it was just a small role. And we are absolutely delighted to have made the final cut of the film! I’m sure you’ll recognize some other familiar faces from the fandom, too.

We were beyond thrilled to get to sit down with the one, the only, Essie Davis and talk about the fan reaction to the film, how she kept Phryne true to Kerry Greenwood’s vision, doing her own stunts, and learning to fan dance. And she has wonderful words of advice to young women. Miraculously, we managed to stay SPOILER FREE in this episode!
Mary still has not fully recovered from this moment.

We talk with Nathan Page about leans in the film (or lack thereof), Jack’s emotional journey, what it’s like to be a heartthrob, and the trials and tribulations of working with fake rocks.

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR THIS EPISODE!
Director of Photography Roger Lanser’s gorgeous lighting was something we loved about the TV series, and it’s positively epic on the big screen in Crypt of Tears. We talk about how he made the transition in his career from film to TV and clever tricks he employed to create effects that fit within the film’s budget.

We also discuss what people can expect at the upcoming Seattle premiere on March 19, 2020. We’ve partnered with SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) to put this party on at the gorgeous SIFF Cinema Egyptian, and we hope to see you there! Sadly, the screening has been postponed until later

In this episode we discuss the costumes (obviously), the maddening “I suddenly need to fly my father to the other side of the globe” plotline, the mystifying “that’s because you’re not a telescope” comment, the beautiful wedding scene, and the glorious end of the episode (even though we are obviously SO sad it’s the end.) We also reflect on how much this show has meant to us and how it has made our lives richer.
We so appreciate those of you who have been listening, and a special thanks to those of you who have reached out to say how much you enjoy the show. We didn’t expect anyone to listen when we set out on this journey, and it’s amazing to find out that people actually have!
And don’t worry—this may be the last episode recap, but there is more in store for you on this podcast. We have interviews and fun bits of audio from Australia that will be coming your way very soon!

Miss Fisher Con 2019 was a whirlwind of stunning garments, fascinating panels, catching up with fandom friends, and making new ones. One of the highlights for us this year was getting to meet MacKenzie and Genevieve, the fabulous women behind the Every Lady Needs a Hobby podcast.
We love hearing how other fans nerd out about this show, and it was especially fun to sit down together and do that in person! It was their first time at Miss Fisher Con, and we loved hearing what they enjoyed from the experience.
If you didn’t get a chance to attend this year, make sure to follow the news for 2020 at missfishercon.com!
