The Mission Church

God’s design for marriage is brilliant, but it does not happen automatically. It must be learned, studied, and intentionally pursued, and it begins with making Jesus the Lord of your life. In God’s Design for Marriage, Pastor David Menard continues our Married Well series through Ephesians 5, showing how a healthy relationship with Christ produces healthier relationships with others.

God’s love is not based on changing feelings. His love is covenantal, secure, and steadfast. As we grow in our understanding of His grace and love, we become better equipped to extend grace, love, patience, and humility to all relationships. Marriage is a workbench where God shapes our character and teaches us to become more like Christ.

For husbands, this means recognizing the tremendous power of their words. A husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church, not only through sacrifice and responsibility, but by using his words to build, strengthen, guide, and encourage her. His words can help bring beauty, confidence, and security into the home, or they can wound and tear down. God calls husbands to know their wives well, speak with understanding, and use the influence they have with wisdom and care.

For wives, God’s design requires resisting the temptation to take control of the marriage. Submission is not weakness; it is one of the ways a wife can reflect the character of Jesus, who willingly submitted Himself to the will of the Father. When a wife fights for control, she will eventually resent the very leadership she worked to take over. Instead, she is called to champion, support, and encourage her husband, remembering that marriage is not about one spouse winning over the other. Either both win, or both lose.

What does sacrificial love really look like? In The Spirit-Led Husband Part 3, Pastor David Menard continues our Married Well mini series through Ephesians 5, focusing on the call for a husband to give sacrificially in order to build his wife.

A husband’s responsibility goes far beyond providing a home, food, or financial security. God calls him to actively invest in his wife’s person, character, mind, actions, temperament, and life with Christ. Just as Jesus continually transforms His Church into His image, a Spirit-led husband seeks to encourage and strengthen his wife as she grows into the woman God is shaping her to be.

Pastor David also warns against the counterfeit of sacrificial love: people-pleasing love. A husband who simply does whatever his wife wants is not necessarily loving her well. Sacrificial love does what is truly best for her, even when that requires difficult decisions, because God’s will must always come before either spouse’s will.

The new life Jesus gives us is not merely a new identity—it produces a new way of living. In Ephesians 4:17–32, Paul moves from who we are in Christ to what that new identity should look like in the everyday choices, attitudes, words, and relationships of a believer.

In The New Life in Practice, Pastor David Menard exposes the cruel paradox of sin: the person continually chasing sensation eventually becomes unable to feel at all. Sin leads us down a dark staircase toward a calloused conscience. Instead of simply asking, “Is there any sin in my life?” we need to ask a deeper question: Is there an area of sin where my heart is becoming calloused and I am no longer mourning over it?

But Jesus creates something entirely new. We are called not merely to know about Christ, but to know Him—to hear Him, learn from Him, and allow His truth to transform us. Like Lazarus called out of the tomb, Jesus calls us to life, heals the internal corruption of sin, and gives us new clothes to wear.

Paul then makes this new life incredibly practical: put off lying and put on speaking truth; put off unrighteous anger and put on righteous anger; put off stealing and put on working and giving; put off corrupt speech and put on edifying speech; put off bitterness and quarreling and put on kindness and Christlike forgiveness. Because Jesus has made us new, we are called to live new.
