Love is more than a feeling—it is the defining mark of the new life we have in Christ. In Ephesians 5:1–7, Paul calls believers to imitate Jesus in every facet of life, walking in the same selfless, sacrificial love that Christ has shown us.

The new life Jesus gives us is not merely a new identity—it produces a new way of living. In Ephesians 4:17–32, Paul moves from who we are in Christ to what that new identity should look like in the everyday choices, attitudes, words, and relationships of a believer.

In The New Life in Practice, Pastor David Menard exposes the cruel paradox of sin: the person continually chasing sensation eventually becomes unable to feel at all. Sin leads us down a dark staircase toward a calloused conscience. Instead of simply asking, “Is there any sin in my life?” we need to ask a deeper question: Is there an area of sin where my heart is becoming calloused and I am no longer mourning over it?

But Jesus creates something entirely new. We are called not merely to know about Christ, but to know Him—to hear Him, learn from Him, and allow His truth to transform us. Like Lazarus called out of the tomb, Jesus calls us to life, heals the internal corruption of sin, and gives us new clothes to wear.

Paul then makes this new life incredibly practical: put off lying and put on speaking truth; put off unrighteous anger and put on righteous anger; put off stealing and put on working and giving; put off corrupt speech and put on edifying speech; put off bitterness and quarreling and put on kindness and Christlike forgiveness. Because Jesus has made us new, we are called to live new.

We all long to belong. We search for identity, significance, and happiness in relationships, possessions, titles, success, pleasure, and the people or things we associate ourselves with. Yet we were created to find our identity in God. Apart from Him, we are left searching for something in this world that can never sustain the soul—always believing happiness is just around the corner.
