Telegram: The cloud-based messaging app offers end-to-end encryption for both messages and voice calls. Users can send up to 1.5GB of files and add up to 2 lakh users in a group. It is compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, Windows NT, macOS and Linux based operating systems.
Signal: It is available on Android and iOS. Unlike WhatsApp, the Signal Private Messenger app is also available on the iPad, and users can also download and install the Signal app on Windows, Linux and Mac, like WhatsApp.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also advised people to “Use Signal”. After his suggestion, Signal beat WhatsApp to become the top free app on App Store in India, Germany, France, Austria, Finland, Hong Kong, and Switzerland.
Wickr: It is an American software company based in San Francisco. The company is best known for its instant messenger application of the same name. Wickr has developed several secure messaging apps based on different customer needs: Wickr Me, Wickr Pro, Wickr RAM, and Wickr Enterprise.
The Wickr instant messaging apps allow users to exchange end-to-end encrypted and content-expiring messages, including photos, videos, and file attachments. The software is available for the iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems.
Threema: It is an open-source end-to-end encrypted instant messaging application for iOS and Android. The software is based on the privacy by design principles as it does not require a phone number or any other personally identifiable information. This helps anonymize the users to a degree.
In addition to text messaging, users can make voice and video calls, send multimedia, locations, voice messages and files. A web app version, Threema Web, can be used on desktop devices. Threema is developed by the Swiss company Threema GmbH.
The servers are located in Switzerland and the development is based in Pfäffikon SZ. As of January 2020, Threema had 8 million users. As of January 2019, the business version, Threema Work, was used by 3,000 companies and organizations.
