In this bonus teaching series of The Mobile Sanctuary titled Letting Go, Pastor Phil Diaz guides us into one of the most important and often misunderstood conversations in the Christian life: the difference between religion and relationship. This episode, Letting Go of Religion, does not dismiss the value of the church, its traditions, or spiritual practices—but rather emphasizes that these are never the end in themselves. At the heart of the gospel is not ritual, but a living relationship with Jesus Christ.
Our guiding scripture is Romans 7:6: “But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.” From this foundation, we will explore how the Christian faith is not about legalism or empty duty, but about walking daily with the God who calls us His children.
Together, we will reflect on:
The Freedom of Christ – Galatians 5:1 declares that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Our relationship with Him is not about bondage to rules but about living in the liberty of grace.
Faith Over Works – Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us that salvation is a gift, not earned by works, but received through faith. Religion alone cannot save; only Christ can.
Rest in Relationship – Matthew 11:28 calls us to find peace in Jesus Himself, not in endless striving. In Him, we discover rest for our souls.
Pastor Phil uses practical illustrations to highlight the contrast—following religion can be like checking off a list, but walking with Christ is like sharing life with a close friend. The goal is never to abandon the disciplines of faith, but to root them in love, intimacy, and the living presence of God.
The session closes with prayer and a call to reflect on where we may be relying on ritual instead of relationship. You will be encouraged to take intentional steps—through prayer, Bible study, and genuine fellowship—to experience the fullness of life in Christ.
