Episode 52: Bad Etiquette, Toxic Groups & Honest Reviews: The Gloves Are Off

Joining the insanity this episode are Jason Hanscom from Blue Ox Model Shop and the Model Car Mania Podcast, along with Frank Perrone, for a show packed with rants, controversy, hobby talk, and plenty of laughs.

Rob kicks things off with TWO epic rants. First up: a discussion about what happens when proper show etiquette goes straight out the window, sparked by the actions of a particular modeler at a recent Virginia show. Then it’s off to the wonderful world of social media, as the guys tackle how a certain modeling group has seemingly gone from being about the hobby to becoming increasingly toxic.

Once Rob’s blood pressure returns to somewhere near normal, the crew takes a quick detour to talk ArmorCon 2026, coming to Danbury, Connecticut, October 2nd and 3rd. AMPS President Neil Stokes and ArmorCon Head Judge Georg Eyerman join the show to give us the rundown on the upcoming event, judging, what attendees can expect, and everything ArmorCon.

Then it’s back to our regularly scheduled insanity.

Listener mail brings up a great question: What actually makes a good product review? The guys discuss what they want to see in reviews, what information actually matters, and whether reviewers should be willing to call out the bad along with the good.

From there, it’s a rapid-fire quick-answer round, upcoming show talk, social media shout-outs, and all the usual nonsense you’ve come to expect from the Modeling Insanity crew.

Episode 51: IPMS Nats Aftermath: Brand Loyalty, Killer Kits & Hobby Hot Takes

Fresh from the IPMS Nationals, the Modeling Insanity crew is back with stories, highlights, new releases, questionable purchases, and the usual post-Nationals exhaustion with Special Guest Ben Pluth.

Then the gloves come off as the guys tackle blind brand loyalty and the modelers who will defend their favorite manufacturer to the death—even when the kit has more problems than the instructions have steps. Episode 50 – The State of the Hobby

For our 50th episode, we invited Dave Grummitt, Managing Editor of Military Modelcraft International to help us tackle one of the biggest questions in scale modeling: What the hell is happening to our hobby?

Nothing is off limits.

Has social media made the hobby better… or has it turned every build into a popularity contest? Are “likes” replacing craftsmanship? Are model shows still the heartbeat of the hobby, or are they becoming an excuse to shop and complain about the judging? Have manufacturers made kits so good that we’re running out of excuses for our own mistakes? And here’s the question that may start the biggest argument of them all… if you’ve got 800 unopened kits stacked to the ceiling, are you really a model builder—or have you become a plastic collector with a building problem?

Riv also takes shots at those keyboard warriors on social media, the fear of honest critique, shrinking attention spans, aftermarket overload, YouTube experts, and whether we’ve become so obsessed with buying the next “must-have” kit that we’ve forgotten the simple joy of actually sitting down and building one.

Nobody was safe. No opinions were filtered. And if you’re looking for an echo chamber, you’ve picked the wrong podcast.

Will everyone agree with us? Absolutely not. In fact, if this episode doesn’t make you nod your head, laugh out loud, or yell at your speakers at least once, we probably didn’t do our job.

Episode 48: Artificial Intelligence, Real Inspiration, & Zero Personal Space

Join Rob Riv, Frank Donati, Justin Ryan, and Steve Santucci for another unpredictable episode of the Modeling Insanity Podcast as they dive into a wide-ranging discussion on the growing role of artificial intelligence in the hobby.
