In this episode, Laura sits down for a chat with Caitlyn Collins, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis. We deep dive into her research examining the production and consequences of social inequality in the US. There were tears, goosebumps, anger, and so so much enlightenment. Caitlyn is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research examines the production and consequences of social inequality. Caitlyn uses qualitative methods to understand gender inequality in the workplace and in family life.

Her current project is a cross-national interview study of 135 working mothers in Sweden, Germany, Italy, and the United States. These four countries offer distinct policy approaches to reconciling work-family conflict. She examines how different ideals of gender, motherhood, and employment are embedded in these policies, and how they shape the daily lives of working mothers in these countries.

Her book based on this research called Making Motherhood Work: How Women Manage Careers and Caregiving was recently published by Princeton University Press.

Caitlyn is a 2019 Nancy Weiss Malkiel Scholar (Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation) and a 2018 Work and Family Researchers Network Early Career Fellow. She earned her PhD in Sociology from The University of Texas at Austin and her BA in Sociology from Whitman College. Her research is supported by organizations including the National Science Foundation, American Association of University Women, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Swedish Council of America.
