When we are porn and sex addicts, boredom is not our friend. It provides a dangerous lid over our emotions that separates us from them. The result is a rudderless existence where we don’t know how we feel and where repressed emotion is expressed in the form of problematic sexual behavior.

We must see boredom for the threat it presents and work to eradicate it. But how do we do this?

Sex and porn addiction are a handful in and of themselves. But, the truth is that for some of us they’re just the tip of the iceberg. It is not unusual clients to approach me with more than one addiction. The multiple addictions often act in a synergistic manner and are used to fulfill specific purposes.

It’s important that we respect the links between mind and body wherever they exist for we are one integrated being. Research suggests that depression can actually cause physiological inflammation within the body that makes conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes more likely.

Similarly, inflammation seems additive to the prevalence of depression as well.

What are some of the mechanisms by which depression and inflammation are linked?

It’s a question that is both vexing and relevant to the discussion of sex addiction. How do we distinguish between sexual liberation and problematic sexual behavior? The answer is to focus on the individual at hand and not on the demographic or sexual behavior. How do we do this when it comes to gay men?

Do I watch porn again or not? Do I call the sex worker or not? We often feel helpless in these moments. Is there anything we can do to make it through them without relapsing? In this podcast, I share several techniques useful in the moment before relapse. I also stress the importance of a regular structure where these techniques are practiced and developed.

All-too-often we allow our perceived weaknesses to dominate our views of ourselves and our recovery plans from addiction. A much wiser plan would integrated our strengths into our recovery.

Our strengths are emotional, skills-based, resource-based and dependent on our personality.

In many ways, this question represents a false choice. All-at-once changes, can only be maintained through a series of related and often smaller choices that sustain our health. Such social connection requires an incremental shift from our inward world of addiction to an outward looking integration with the rest of the world. An incremental shift that often goes unnoticed with a cold turkey pronouncement to never view porn again.
