This last week I got to visit Salt Lake City for a conference and man oh man do I have some stories to share. Overall, I was struck with the concept of inevitability and how we might underestimate the time it takes for something to be realized, and yet it eventually is finished. Recently, I had an experience that reminded me of the joys of going the extra mile. I feel my relationship with kindness to strangers, friends, and just in general has evolved quite a bit and yet as always I feel like I’m always relearning what it means to be kind. So today on the podcast I wanted to talk about what it means to go the extra mile, why it feels good to be kind, and how we might evaluate our relationship with kindness this season to prepare ourselves to receive more light into our lives.

You’ve probably experienced this. You have a desire to do something or are trying something new that you are excited about. And then something whispers, you can’t do this. You can’t succeed, you’re not good enough, you should just give up. I call this the Inner Critic or the voice of your brain trying to keep you from going after a goal. As we pursue goals, often we can get caught up in the idea of discipline or making things harder on ourselves for our good. This has a place. But sometimes we also get so hard on ourselves or we think our circumstances need to change so much that we find ourselves stuck in wishing things were better or that we were somewhere else away from it all. When in fact, we just need to make it lighter. Today on the podcast I ask the question, “what sounds fun?”, to inspire us in rethinking how we are approaching goals and get us thinking on what could make our current situation fun and light and full of the pleasure that will maybe also get us to our goals better.

It’s not about feeling better. The self-improvement world can attract us because of the notion that we can make our life feel better than it actually is in this moment. Yet a lot of the time we get dissuaded because in the pursuit of what we want we end up feeling worse maybe then we started.
