Navigating the NFL and Performance Over the Long Run

With the NFL draft starting up tomorrow, we thought it was perfect timing to share our conversation with Kyle Rudolph — NFL Tight End and 9 year veteran of the Minnesota Vikings (the team to which he was drafted in 2011). Kyle is a two-time Pro Bowler, a two-time nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, and is 2nd All-Time in the Viking Organization for receptions and receiving yards. As a lifelong fan of the sport, it’s really a privilege to talk about football with someone who’s played at such a high level, and particularly someone as thoughtful as Kyle with his approach to training and the game. He’s a really great guy and I’m proud to know him.

My guest today is our good friend Jimmy Chin. Many of you won’t need an introduction to Jimmy and his work, but for anyone who isn’t yet familiar, Jimmy is a world-renowned mountaineer, photographer, and filmmaker. His passion for adventure, combined with his creative eye and relentless work ethic, has fueled a remarkable career as both an athlete and an artist.

These days, many of you will probably recognize Jimmy for his Academy Award Winning Documentary, Free Solo, which follows the journey of our mutual friend and rock climber Alex Honnold as he works to be the first person to ever climb Yosemite’s famous El Cap without a rope. It’s hard to find too many other Oscar winners who have also climbed Everest, let alone those who have done it multiple times. COVID-19’s Impact on Sports, Mindset, and Building Relationships

My guest today is our good friend Bijan Heravi. Bijan is an agent to an interesting mix of professional athletes, with two of his top partners being CrossFit athlete Noah Ohlsen and NBA player Tim Hardaway Jr. Bijan is an extremely thoughtful and caring person who also happens to train like an absolute animal. His clients often joke that he trains more than they do. He is based in Miami, Florida and has earned both his Undergraduate and Law Degree from the University of Miami.

Today my guest on the podcast is Kit Deslauriers. Kit is a professional skier and mountaineer living in Jackson Hole,Wyoming. She is best know for being the first person to ski the Seven Summits. She’s been named Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic, she’s a two-time winner of the World Freeskiing Championship, and a mother of two.

Living as a Pro Athlete Couple, Motivation, and Balance

My guests today are Sarah and Ben True. Sarah and Ben are a professional athlete couple living and training in New Hampshire. Ben is a professional runner who holds the American road record in the 5k and has represented the US multiple times in cross country and track. Sarah is a professional triathlete and 2x Olympian for the US in both London and Rio. She’s won a silver medal and two bronze in the ITU World Championships and has since stepped up to compete at the Ironman distance.

This was a fun episode, in part because it was our first episode with two guests. We had a lively conversation about a variety of topics including the strain your body takes as endurance athletes, what it’s like to live with another professional athlete, training solo versus training in groups, how they approach nutrition, and what it takes to keep motivation high.

Today my guest on the podcast is one of my favorite humans, Rob Dyrdek. Rob is the CEO and Founder of the Dyrdek Machine, a venture studio dedicated to investing in, designing, and systematically building consumer businesses. Rob is also a previous founder of multiple successful businesses, a former professional skateboarder, an actor, a stuntman, a producer, and a lifelong entrepreneur. He became a pro skateboarder at the age of 16 and started his first company at the age of 18. His career helped propel DC Shoes from an up-and-coming skate brand to a $500 million business. All the while he co-created and produced his first hit TV show, setting himself up for an increasingly successful run of programs like Rob & Big, Fantasy Factory, and Ridiculousness.

On this episode, we talk about the work he’s doing at Dyrdek Machine, what he’s seen company’s do well when they’ve been successful, how Rob takes care of himself and prioritizes things like supplementation and sleep, and what it’s been like raising two young kids. My guest today is Tim Ritchie. Tim is the Head Cross Country Coach for U-Mass Amherst and a professional runner for Saucony. He is also the 2017 US marathon champion and has posted elite times at nearly every distance from the 5k to the marathon. When we recorded this episode, Tim was in the midst of preparing for the US Olympic marathon trials. That race is now just a few days away and Tim will line up this Saturday as he tries to earn a spot on the 2020 Olympic team headed to Tokyo this summer.

In this episode, we talked about what lead Tim to become a marathoner, how his training has changed since beginning a career and balancing his running with a full-time job, the positive mentality he needs to keep in order to keep progressing, the cleanse you can get from a long run, and the impact that stress has on training.

Waking up Rejuvenated, our Biological Sleep Tendencies, and Sleep Supplementation

My guest today is Dr. Allison Brager. Dr. Brager is an expert and researcher in the fields of behavioral genetics, sleep, and biological rhythms and is a researcher in those fields for the US Army. She serves on the NCAA task force for mental health and sleep, and is the author of Meathead: Unraveling the Athletic Brain, a book that aims to debunk the myth of the “dumb jock.” Dr. Brager is also a two-time CrossFit Games athlete in the Team division and a former Division I athlete in track and field. 

In this episode we talked about Dr. Brager’s research in sleep, how some professional positions may pre-select themselves based on our individual sleep tendencies, how intermittent fasting is being studied to prolong life, what we can learn about Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin’s sleep habits, and what you need to know about sleep supplements.
