In this episode of The Morning Marketer we sit down with Georgia Patten, founder of Bored George, one of New Zealand's fastest-growing sunglasses brands.
Georgia's journey started with a boring desk job managing physiotherapy clinics in Auckland, right after moving home from London. On the side, she began importing pre-designed sunglasses she'd collected from markets in Turkey and Morocco, selling them at local markets out of pure curiosity, not with any plan to build a company.
Using what she learned from those early market stalls, she taught herself to design, found manufacturers who'd work through 100 back-and-forth messages to get a single detail right, and launched her first original styles with just 70 pairs per colourway. Today Bored George is stocked in more than 90 retailers across New Zealand and Australia, and Georgia made the call this year to pull out of wholesale entirely and go full e-commerce.
In this conversation, Georgia shares why brand, not product, is the only thing that actually protects you from being copied, why she doubled down on marketing when other retailers cut back during downturns, and the exact dashboards she's built in Claude to track attribution across every platform.
Georgia gives a candid, practical look at what it actually takes to go from a market stall to a multi-stockist retail brand, and proves that a business built without a plan can still become the plan.
