Our close friends, that we have spent every Thanksgiving with for the past 10+ years, recently let us know that because we have differing opinions on many topics, that they can’t in “good conscience” enjoy a thanksgiving meal with us. Our relationship with them is so important to us, and we are devastated. 

Any advice is welcome.  Please help!

My best friend and I are pregnant at the same time! She is a few months behind me and we are absolutely stoked that we’re going through this at the same time. Here’s my dilemma. She recently announced the gender of her baby and the name they are going with. My husband and I haven’t come up with a name up until this point and when we saw the first name of their child, we LOVED it. In fact, we felt the name was perfect in what we were looking for with our child as well.

Is it wrong for me to also take that name for our child as well? I’m not trying to steal names or annoy anybody, we just really love the name. I don’t want to lose my friend over this.

Dear Rebecca & Burns,

We recently lived with my Father-in-law for 8 months to save money.  And it was horrible.  He was a terrible role model for our kids.  He rarely showered and was super negative about everything.  Now that we’ve moved out, I don’t want to see the man, but my husband feels obligated to let him see the kids because he is family – AND it’s the Christian thing to do. But,  I don’t want our toddler mimicking all of the negativity. 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Our dear friends have a son who is going on a mission trip. The parents told him he has to fundraise for it, and we received his letter asking for a $200 donation. First, I feel like that's awfully high. But here's the real dilemma. This is a very wealthy family. Not only can they afford the mission trip, they could afford to send all of the kids in the youth group. My husband doesn't want to give to his fundraiser, but they are our dear friends.

When I anticipate my first glimpse of heaven, I remember the first time I went snorkeling.

I saw countless fish of every shape, size  and color. Just when I thought I'd seen the most beautiful fish, along came one even more striking. Etched in my memory is the sound of a gasp going through my snorkel as my eyes were opened to a breathtaking underwater world.

As believers, I imagine our first glimpse of heaven will cause us to gasp in a similar way—with amazement and delight. That first gasp will likely be followed by many more as we continually encounter new sights in that endlessly wonderful place.

Though most of us are in no hurry to get to our final destination, we all have questions about it. After in-depth study of the Scriptures, here are some of the most frequently asked questions.

We had a terrible scare the other day. My sweet son, Nick, was hit by a car on his bike on Kirkpatrick in Flower Mound.

He was not wearing a helmet. He knows he is supposed to, but I was exhausted and didn’t check to see if he had it. I haven’t the last few times.

He has road rash on both legs, and his elbow. He has a scraped up torso. But miraculously, and by the mercy and grace of God, it appears that we avoided a head injury. I’ll watch him tonight and tomorrow to make sure he has no concussion symptoms.

This could have ended so differently. I can’t stop seeing him all bloody on the ground. The impact knocked him out of one shoe.

Please make your kids wear a helmet. We will never make this mistake again. If Nick won’t wear a helmet, he won’t ride his bike.

I haven’t stopped thanking God since it happened. But I want to say a few more thank you’s:

To the poor gentleman who hit him—thank you for stopping and calling the police. Thank you so much. Please pray for this kind man.
To the sweet woman who called me and started with, “I’m with your son and he’s okay.”
To the police who arrived within minutes and the fire fighters who hugged me. To the EMT who made me repeat her instructions back to her.

Please, please make your kids wear helmets.
