When our minds are full of worries, complaints, and distractions, it becomes difficult to notice the good around us. By creating a little space and quiet, we allow gratitude and awareness to enter.

There is a simple Zen story about a professor who visited a master to learn. As the master poured tea, the cup filled—and then overflowed. Tea spilled onto the table and floor until the professor finally objected, pointing out that the cup was already full.
The master’s lesson was simple: when a cup is already full, nothing new can enter.
In many ways, our minds can become like that overflowing cup. Over time they fill with worries, complaints, comparisons, and constant noise. When that happens, even good moments struggle to reach us.
A sunset appears outside the window, but our attention is somewhere else. A grandchild says something delightful, but our mind is busy replaying an old conversation or scanning the next headline.
The cup itself isn’t the problem. The problem is what’s already crowding the space.
In retirement especially, one of the quiet gifts available to us is the ability to slow down and make room. When we create a little silence, a little openness, we often discover that something good was already there waiting.
A simple step for today:
Spend two minutes in silence this morning. No phone, no television, no distractions. Just sit quietly and allow your mind to settle.
Reflection Question:
What small moment of goodness might you notice today if you gave it a little more space?
Sometimes the best way to receive more is simply to make room. That’s your morning step.
