It’s one of the most difficult stories in the Bible, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. You probably know the story of Abraham and Isaac as an example of sacrifice. You may have been asked “Would you sacrifice your Isaac for God?” to show your love, devotion or praise. But it’s really a story about trust.

Digging into context and common practices of the gods at the time will help you see this story of a father and son as foreshadowing to the life of Jesus. If you’ve struggled with a God who uses the pain of people as an ego boost, you’ll find healing in the true message of the one who sacrificed more than he’ll ever ask of us. Because Genesis 22 is really about a father who provides.

Everyone thinks they know the story of Jonah because it’s a classic for Veggie Tales and Sunday School. But the book of Jonah isn’t just about disobedience realized from the belly of a big fish. It’s satire, an intentionally exaggerated story that shows us the patience of God hiding in plain sight from beginning to end.

In relationships, you shouldn’t ask the question “Do you think about me as much as I think about you?” because the answer may be disappointing. But do you ever wonder if God thinks about you? Scriptures like Jeremiah 29:11 tell us that God does. He thinks about your plans, hopes and future.

This message will challenge you to ask the question, how often do you think about God? The book of Ezra will encourage you that it’s probably more often than you realize. God is not playing games with you, but sometimes it feels like life is dealing you in to a game you didn't ask to play. Instead of asking why you have to handle certain things that other people don’t seem to have to worry about, you can learn to deal with what you’ve got.

What does it mean to be adopted into God’s family? If you’ve ever felt like you have to meet certain criteria or that your belonging is determined by someone else’s approval, this message is for you. We’re comforted by clarity, control and certainty, but when it comes to Christianity, comfort was not guaranteed. When Jesus ascended to heaven, he left his Holy Spirit with us as a helper, guide - and even a comforter! - but with it also came the responsibility to carry the way of Jesus forward.
