Fear can feel comfortable, like an old shirt that gives you a sense of familiarity. But just like you shouldn’t try to squeeze into clothes you’ve outgrown, you need to let go of fear that restricts you as well.

Noah’s Ark is traditionally thought of as a story for kids, but when you read the scriptures, this is not a sweet, innocent story. It depicts an angry God who gets fed up with humanity and chooses destruction as a solution. In this last week of Old School, we reframe the story of the flood to see what it teaches us about God.

If you’ve feared that God has given up on you or that you’re never going to be deserving of love, it’s time to relearn this story from Genesis 6 as a story of redemption by a God who never quits on humanity. Because sometimes focusing on the details of the story keep you from really seeing what the story is pointing to.

When we’re chosen for something - a job, a team, a special project - it makes us feel special. Sometimes we’re picked because we earned it or did something to deserve the position. But when it comes to God, he doesn’t choose people for recognition, but responsibility.

This message on Abraham and Sarah (or Abram and Sarai), centers on an often overlooked person in their story, Hagar. It also also sheds a light on what happens when God’s people mistake their chosenness for privilege. If you’re wondering why God needs to have a specific, set apart group of people to begin with, this message on Genesis 16 and Genesis 22 will help you understand what it means to be in God’s family.

It’s one of the most difficult stories in the Bible, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. You probably know the story of Abraham and Isaac as an example of sacrifice. You may have been asked “Would you sacrifice your Isaac for God?” to show your love, devotion or praise. But it’s really a story about trust.

Digging into context and common practices of the gods at the time will help you see this story of a father and son as foreshadowing to the life of Jesus. If you’ve struggled with a God who uses the pain of people as an ego boost, you’ll find healing in the true message of the one who sacrificed more than he’ll ever ask of us. Because Genesis 22 is really about a father who provides.

Everyone thinks they know the story of Jonah because it’s a classic for Veggie Tales and Sunday School. But the book of Jonah isn’t just about disobedience realized from the belly of a big fish. It’s satire, an intentionally exaggerated story that shows us the patience of God hiding in plain sight from beginning to end.

If you know God is showing you something but you’re having a hard time seeing it clearly, this message will help you open your eyes to see the way God does. You can stop looking for hidden clues in the Bible to lead you to a truth that needs revealing. God has been right front of you the whole time, and he’ll keep waiting patiently until you understand.

In relationships, you shouldn’t ask the question “Do you think about me as much as I think about you?” because the answer may be disappointing. But do you ever wonder if God thinks about you? Scriptures like Jeremiah 29:11 tell us that God does. He thinks about your plans, hopes and future.

This message will challenge you to ask the question, how often do you think about God? The book of Ezra will encourage you that it’s probably more often than you realize. Every time you’re generous with your time, talents and treasures to build the kingdom, you’re thinking of what matters most to God.

Have Christians focused so much on humanity’s failures that we’ve forgotten who we are? Because according to God’s word in Genesis 1, before there was shame, there was goodness. When we confuse the order, we confuse our identities as God’s good creation.
This message on the story of Adam and Eve will help you understand the real impact of sin and how Jesus redeems us through relationship with him. If you’ve been defined by your worst moments, God wants you to know that you were loved before you were ever called a sinner.

Some stories in the Bible seem to end abruptly. Acts is one of them. After following Paul’s story so closely, we’re left wondering what happened next.
