Alyssa Medina and Ben Rafferty have been playing together for years now, but it was only about a year ago that they decided to come together and form the duo Violet Breeze. They wanted to be able to play whatever they decided, along with travel to various venues across Colorado and beyond, so they formed a duo.

Their name started as an inside joke – after trying to get away with a name that incorporated nicknames they use for each other (“Hairdo” and “Barf,” respectively), they settled on the name Violet Breeze, referencing the breaking wind of Medina’s dog. They play songs from many different influences, from straight songs by Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, and Linda Rondstadt to mashups of Keller Williams and Madonna, along with Boyz II Men, Rancid, and Soundgarden.

They also work in Rafferty’s original songs every now and again, as he’s been writing songs for over 20 years now. His first spark in music came after seeing Def Leppard’s classic “Pour Some Sugar on Me” on MTV, and while he initially focused on drums, he eventually shifted to the piano.......

Megan (guitar, mandolin, and vocals) and Maddie Cody (guitar, clawhammer banjo, vocals, and primary songwriting) have been joined at the hip as siblings for their entire lives. They started playing guitar together when their dad introduced them to the instrument when Maddie was six and Megan was eight. Soon after, they performed their first show at a local coffee shop, and they’ve been playing ever since. Their dad used to play bass with them, but a few years ago, once they went to college, the duo met Will Pavilonis, a jazz bass major at Denver University. From there, The Cody Sisters as they are now were formed.

In elementary school in southcentral Pennsylvania, Noah G. Fowler recalls having a small orchestra program. Kids would put their names in to be drawn for a certain instrument, and teachers would pick a name at random at the start of the school year. Luckily for Noah, he was the only student interested in playing the upright bass. He took lessons at his school and played in the orchestra. When he got into high school, he signed up for an in-school coffeehouse program to perform covers and originals. He started learning guitar, drums, piano, and pretty much every instrument he could get his hands on.

Peak to Peak local Scott Harrison does not consider himself a poet as most people would define one. He doesn’t make a living out of his poetry and is mostly unpublished. His collection, simply titled Haiku Poetry, which focuses on the animals he carved for the beloved Carousel of Happiness, is available on the carousel’s website (carouselofhappiness.org). Otherwise, though, he primarily enjoys writing poetry for himself and reading poetry of others, including The Mountain-Ear’s own Alexander Shalom Joseph.

LISTEN: Guitarist Alex Thoele and upright bassist Jon Pickett met in the summer of 2006 in Estes Park, as they were both part of a campfire party walking up to the top of a mountain. They’ve been writing music and playing together ever since. In 2010, things would change when mandolin player Jarett Mason started playing with them. Banjo player and vocalist Chris “C-Bob” Elliot joined as well, in 2018, cementing the (mostly) current lineup of what is now called Chain Station.....
