The Movement Cast

Hi friend. If your ministry doesn’t multiply beyond you, you may not have a commitment problem. You may have a systems problem. Many leaders want their ministry to multiply. But every problem still comes back to them, and every solution still has to come from them.

Many of today’s fastest-growing movements have one thing in common: they have built effective systems. In this episode of The Movement Cast, I talk with John Cox and Dustin Doll of Kingdom Life about systems in ministry. It may be the most exploratory conversation I’ve ever had on the podcast.

We discuss why Alan Hirsch counts organic systems among only six elements of movemental churches, and why he warns, “If you don’t pay attention to your system, it will pay attention to you.” We explore what a good system can achieve, and what it can’t. We also lay a biblical foundation for systems thinking, and John and Dustin answer Christians who see it as business thinking brought into the church.

Dear friend, when you are reading these lines, I will be on a plane to Lima, Peru, where I’ll spend a week equipping the leaders of the Latin American ministry Reflejo under the leadership of the wonderful Dave Matthews. Reflejo has been shifting toward a movement-ministry paradigm, and I have the privilege of helping them set themselves up as a movemental organization — one that becomes increasingly effective in catalyzing movements.

In part two of my conversation with Matt Millar and Augustin Longa, we go deeper into the practice of making the kingdom relevant. The key question is not only, “Are we preaching?” but, “Are people hearing?”

We explore how culture can become a hidden entrance fee to the kingdom, how churches can unintentionally export their own church culture, and how leaders can discern whether people are truly hearing the gospel—or merely encountering something that feels foreign, irrelevant, or burdensome.

Matt and Augustin also address a common fear: Does contextualization water down the gospel? Their answer helps us hold together faithfulness to the gospel with genuine love for people and their context. This episode is for anyone who wants to communicate the gospel clearly, humbly, and beautifully in the places where God has placed them.

Salam, dear friend. I’ve just returned from training NEO leaders in Catalytic Leadership and in how to identify and address Movement Boosters and Blockers. The response was nothing short of amazing. In the room, senior leaders made an ad hoc decision: they want to equip all 7,800 of their church planters across the Middle East in the Catalytic Qualities. Even more remarkably, they decided to begin rolling out a coaching process “next week” among all leaders, cascading all the way down to grassroots church planters and house church leaders. Alhamdulillah!

And that makes today’s podcast episode especially timely. I’m joined by Matt Millar and Augustin Longa for a real, raw conversation about what they call “cultural humility” and the way we carry the gospel.

We ask a direct and uncomfortable question: What if people around us are not rejecting Jesus, but rejecting the cultural packaging we attach to Jesus?

Matt and Augustin help us explore why cultural humility is not a missionary technique, but a kingdom posture for every Christian. We talk about the danger of assuming that our way of being Christian is the normal one, and how leaders can begin to recognize when they are bringing their own culture into ministry more than they realize.
