Director Alfonso Cuarón packs lots of social commentary (Immigration, Police State) in his world where women stop having babies, but don’t worry… it doesn’t get in the way of a great chase thriller. The film wasn’t a box office hit, but is now considered to be one of the greatest sci-fi films.

The film’s troubled production is notorious; the film ran over budget, the director (Kevin Reynolds) left the project before editing was completed, and a small set sank to the bottom of the ocean! Regardless, the film is still a fun post-apocalyptic adventure. Yes… it’s Mad Max on water, but the world-building is well done. And the Atoll battle scene is jaw dropping, so many great stunts! Episode 162: Will the Crew fall to the black sleep of the Kali Ma as they discuss Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? No, cause it’s a fun adventure film. No time for sleep Dr. Jones! The film did cause some controversy over the amount of violence and child slavery plot. And as a result, the PG-13 rating was created (Gremlins helped as well). Red Dawn was the first PG-13 film, released only two months after Temple of Doom.
