Susan Kelsey, academic in the field of Women in Filmmaking, joins Carolyn and Colin this week to talk about Mindy Kaling's 2019 film "Late Night".  The film stars Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, and John Lithgow, and centres around an aging late night talk show host Katherine Newbury, who worries she may be losing her show and adds a South Asian-American woman to her all white, all male writing staff. This episode brings out a strong conversation about women in filmmaking, sexism in the workplace, and what makes good comedy.

"Constantine" is the 2005 adaptation of the comic series "Hellblazer" by Alan Moore, and The Movie Exchange traded their opinions of this film this week, while touching on comic to film/television adaptations in general. It stars an epic cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia Lebeouf, and Tilda Swinton, among others. Carolyn and Colin also have a discussion of successful storytelling and poor storytelling across both Marvel and DC Cinematic Universes.

Joining Carolyn and Colin this week is a special guest, actually making her first podcast appearance, Nicole Downton. Nicole is a well-known local comedian and movie fan, and suggested a rewatch of the 2009 horror film, The Strangers. Centred around a violent home invasion in the early hours of the morning, a couple portrayed by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman must push through an uncertain moment in their relationship and try to stay alive. This film has gotten many mixed reviews over the years, and our hosts and guest have a lot to say (spoilers ahead!)

This week, Carolyn and Colin are talking about the 1998 film "Phantoms", starring Ben Affleck, Rose McGowan, Liev Schreiber, and Joanna Going, who find themselves the lone survivors of an attack from ancient sources in a small town. In a year known for big budget blockbusters, this film made a meagre $5.6M at the box office. But as we all know, "Ben Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms, yo!" Join us for a discussion of what hits and what misses in this film.

Colin and Carolyn are joined again this week by their friend and fellow movie enthusiast, Christopher Tobin, for their first double feature review of The French Connection and French Connection 2. Released in 1971 and 1975 respectively, these films are based on a novel by the same name that was influenced by a real case in New York in the 1960's, and two real NYPD detectives. Gene Hackman gives an Oscar winning performance as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle, and is joined by Roy Schneider as Buddy Russo, as they follow their intuition and try to take down a French kingpin dealing drugs in their city. Popeye travels to France for the sequel, and takes on Alan Charnier on his turf this time.

In this weeks episode, Colin and Carolyn explore a 1987 Fantasy Action Comedy, the critically acclaimed and beloved theatrical flop, The Princess Bride. Directed by Rob Reiner and written by William Goldman, this film brought us an all star cast including Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Wallace Shawn, Mandy Pantakin, Andre the Giant, Christopher Guest, Billy Crystal and Carol Kane. After finding a cult following almost immediately upon VHS release that has lasted until today, this film has definitely made its mark on meme culture.

This film stars Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman and focuses heavily on the investigation by the Washington Post into the events of the Watergate Scandal. 

Next up, Carolyn and Colin discuss one of the least theatrically successful films to have found a following after VHS release, The Princess Bride.

This week, Carolyn and Colin are joined by Sheldon Button from "Showtime with Sheldon" and 99.3 The Goat, to discuss the iconic blockbuster from 1993 "Jurassic Park." With Richard Attenborough, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum leading the cast and Stephen Spielberg at the helm directing, this film brought in over a billion dollars, and set the gold standard for summer blockbusters since.
