November 24, 2023 Hanksgiving 2023

It’s a yearly tradition like no other. Why spend time with your actual family when you can spend time with America’s Dad, Tom Hanks? This year, Nico and Adam throw back to Hanks’s early career with five of his 80s comedies. Included: Bachelor Party, the raunchy sex comedy that serves as his sophomore follow-up to Splash (9:26); The Money Pit, the Hanks-Shelley Long two-hander about a couple renovating the house from hell (19:46); The ‘Burbs, the Joe Dante comedy horror film co-starring Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher (30:16); Turner & Hooch, the smash-hit Disney film about a detective and his charmingly hideous dog (42:59); and Joe Versus the Volcano, John Patrick Shanley’s terribly received cult classic that doubles as Hanks’s first romcom with Meg Ryan (53:19).

October 27, 2023 Found Footage Horror

Nico and Adam sift through a pile of unmarked tapes to uncover the origins of the found footage genre. After a surprise SIXTH nominee is added to the list (11:13), the guys discuss: The Blair Witch Project, the film that popularized the genre and terrified audiences in a way few films ever have (26:01); Paranormal Activity, the first installment of the mega-franchise that helped solidify Blumhouse as the studio for 21st century horror (36:03); [REC], the hyper-real Spanish zombie movie with a final 10 minutes that won’t leave your brain (45:32); Cloverfield, the post-9/11, American riff on Godzilla that proved, if anything, that J.J. Abrams is damn good marketer (59:06); and Creep; the mumblegore two-hander starring Mark Duplass and director Patrick Brice (1:09:29).

September 25, 2023 Class of Paul W.S. Anderson

Nico and Adam complete their two-part exploration of trashy sci-fi auteurs by watching six basic cable classics directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The films discussed: Shopping, Anderson’s indie debut that showcases his punk sensibilities and the acting prowess of newcomer Jude Law (8:51); Mortal Kombat, Anderson’s colorfully plotless adaptation of the arcade game of the same name (20:25); Event Horizon, a gnarly space horror flick, starring Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill, that was predestined for cult status (34:24); Soldier, a criminally underrated Kurt Russell vehicle that doubles as a secret Blade Runner spin-off (46:58); Resident Evil, the first installment of Anderson’s signature franchise, starring his future wife Mila Jovovich (1:04:21); and Death Race, an update of Roger Corman’s 70s camp classic, starring Jason Statham and a loaded cast of character actors (1:23:02).
