In this episode, I talk about how I went from being unfit, unhappy and feeling unfulfilled to doing a 180 on my own fitness
And finding myself running 37 marathons (so far!)
In 1979 Mike’s family fled from civil unrest in Vietnam...
They headed for Hong Kong as Vietnamese boat people
Many families didn’t make the journey…
They were either washed away by rough seas or became victims of pirates.
The lucky ones arrived in Hong Kong.
Mike and his family were amongst the lucky ones…
Once they docked in Hong Kong, they were greeted by the British Red Cross, which had them stay in a refugee camp with hundreds of others who had fled Vietnam.
The British Red Cross helped them safely relocate to the UK.
And for that, Mike is forever grateful.
So much so that he was inspired to give back to the Red Cross.
30 years later, that’s what he did...
In 2007, Mike entered his first-ever marathon (New York) in aid of the Red Cross.
After running his first 26.2 mile event, something magical happened…
He became hooked on running.
He loved the challenge of running and how great he felt afterwards.
And entered even more marathons.
Over the next 16 years, he ran 36 more marathons.
However, it was in 2017, during a pivotal period, that he experienced one of his lowest points in life.
He had lost his way and thought there had to be more to life.
So he looked at how he could live the life he truly wanted.
Running became his medicine to pick him up and propel him forward again.
Now, while he recognised physical health was ultra-important,
He quickly discovered exercise was only one part of the equation.
Because he soon realised that you have to look after yourself in every area -
Movement - Getting you moving regularly so that you can improve your fitness
Nutrition - Getting to grips with the basics of nutrition so that you can FUEL your body properly, both inside and out
Strength and conditioning - Introducing you to the world of cross-training/strength & conditioning so that you can CHANGE the way your body LOOKS and FEELS
Mindset and emotional resilience - Challenging and developing the way you think, as you would any other mthemcle in your body, so that the results you get STICK,
Immersing himself in how the mind works…
Delved into the depths of nutrition…
And became obsessed with moving the body.
And when he integrated all areas…
His life drastically changed.
And uncovered fitness as his true passion in life.
People started noticing there was something different about him.
They wanted to know how he could put his body through so many marathons… and still be so positive and upbeat about them.
If he hadn’t discovered running, health, nutrition and mindset, Mike says that he doesn’t know where he would be today.
So it was his duty to show the world how powerful this stuff is.
Going all in with what MPRS (Michael Phan Running Specialist) was going to provide
He wanted to meet like-minded people and show them how to integrate the 4 steps – movement, nutrition, strength and mindset into their lives too.
He honed this 4-step blueprint…
