  • Early childhood music therapy and Autsim
On October 26, 2012, I will talk to Petra Kern and Marcia Humpal, editors of Early Childhood Music Therapy and Autism Spectrum Disorders.  This book presents a comprehensive overview of current research and music therapy practice for young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families. Topics include an overview of recent developments in ASD, specific implications of evidence-based practice, and a newly conducted meta-analysis providing evidence that music therapy is an effective treatment option for young children with ASD. Subsequent chapters cover assessment, goals and treatment approaches such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Social Stories™, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, and the DIR®/Floortime™ Model as well as instructional strategies and techniques used in music therapy practice. The authors discuss collaboration and consultation with interdisciplinary team members, including early childhood educators, speech-language pathologists, and occupational therapists. Family-centered practice, how to integrate music into home routines and insights from music therapists who are parents of children with ASD enrich this work. Case scenarios, examples, checklists, charts, tip sheets, music scores, online and other resources, plus an annotated bibliography complete the book.
