On this weeks episode of the Musicians Mentor podcast I speak with Wang Chung drummer (and multi instrumentalist) - Joshua Thompson.

Josh and I met a few months ago at a gig that both of our bands were on. I was instantly drawn to his power as a drummer and before you knew it we got talking. Turned out that he was/is not only a super talented musician, but also one of the coolest dudes you'd ever cross paths with.

A life long musician, Josh grew up picking up music in the churches his family was involved in, starting first with drums and then eventually guitar and singing. From there he cut his teeth as a gigging musician for about a decade before getting the roll as drummer with 80's icons - Wang Chung. He has also performed with Cutting Crew and a host of others.

During our interview we talk about drumming, AI, touring, un unorganized promoters, work/life balance and a host of other topics.

This week on the Musicians Mentor podcast I speak with South African born singer/songwriter/producer and Goth/Darkwave band 'The Awakening' founder - Ashton Nyte.

Ashton and I first crossed paths at a gig that both our bands were on, when I was probably around 16 years old. 'The Awakening' had recently had a number one single on the Rock charts over there with their cover version of 'The Sound Of Silence, and it was pretty clear (to me atleast), that they were destined for more.

Fast forward a few decades and frontman, Ashton Nyte has proven beyond a doubt that he truly is quite the creative force, having released over a dozen albums under 'The Awakening' banner, eight solo records and even written two books.

In this interview, Ashton and I talk about his entrepreneurial mindset, his company 'Intervention Arts', his decision to relocate to the United States', tour life and even - Elvis.

Dan Lavery is a New Jersey based multi instrumentalist musician, most prominently known for his role as the bassist in 90's Alt/Rock band 'Tonic' - whose breakout hit 'If You Could Only See' was recognized as rock radio's most-played song of 1997.

Originally part of the band 'True', Dan decided to relocate to Los Angeles in the mid 90's to try and further his career. A decision that ultimately ended up being life changing for him.

For today's episode I thought I'd share an archived interview from around twelve years ago, that I did with session drumming legend - Clem Cattini.

Based in Stoke Newington, UK - Clem Cattini is an English drummer who was not only a member of 'The Tornados' but so prominent in the 50's, 60's and 70's that he is actually regarded as one of the most prolific drummers in UK recording history, appearing on hundreds of recordings by artists like Cliff Richard, Lou Reed, Marc Bolan, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, The Yardbirds and Tom Jones.

Clem and I talk about his work with a young Jimmy Page, how hard it was to get lessons back in the day, songwriting and of course his legendary drumming career - where he played on over 40 UK number one singles.

On episode 100 of the show, I’m joined by South African multi instrumentalist/producer and 'Just Jinjer' bassist - Denholm Harding.

Denholm began his musical career in Cape Town at the age of 5, when he appeared on a nationally televised talent show open to all ages called ‘Follow That Star’ where he made it through to the finals. By Grade 7, he joined popular kids program K-TV as the ‘K-TV Kids’ Band drummer and moved up to Johannesburg to pursue his musical career. The band toured Southern Africa extensively for 3 years and appeared numerous times on multiple television shows.

Barely out of his teens he then joined South African Multi-Platinum super group Just Jinjer shortly after the release of their critically acclaimed debut album.

Just Jinjer are considered one of the most successful Rock bands to ever come out of South Africa and have shared stages with artists like U2, Counting Crows, Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, Goo Goo Dolls, Def Leppard, Spice Girls and Live… just to mention a few.

In taking the next step Denholm coupled his deep understanding of music and instruments with his spectacular ear and began producing albums for other artists and bands like Jesse Clegg and Prime Circle,. He has since been nominated multiple times for “Best Producer” and “Best Engineer” at the South Africa’s music awards the SAMA’s numerous times.

Derrick is a British based drummer/dj/producer known worldwide for his time with Acid Funk pioneers 'Jamiroquai' - a band who (at this point) he has been with for over 3 decades.In addition to his amazing career with Jamiroquai he has also worked with 'Purple Disco Machine', DR Packer and Matt Johnson (among others).
