This week we begin our Advent series as we prepare our hearts for Christmas. We’ll be in Isaiah 9:2–7 with a message titled, “The Name That Breaks the Night.”

In Isaiah’s day, God’s people were living in deep darkness—rebellion in their hearts, enemies on every side, fear in their future. And into that darkness came a promise: a Child would be born, a Son would be given, a King would come.

The promise was given in the night. And that’s often where God has us too. Darkness and waiting are never enjoyable, but they are places God uses. God’s people had to wait for the Messiah, and their waiting happened in darkness and silence. Ours often does too.

So if God has called His people to wait—and calls us to wait—how do we do that well?

There is a Name we can call on, and that Name is exactly what we need.

The night is not meant to break us, it’s meant to refine us. This series is meant to pull our attention back to the Name of Jesus. This time of year brings all kinds of false hopes and expectations. Let’s fix our eyes on Jesus, no matter where God has us right now. He is exactly what we need.
