The Dangerous Maybe and No Future join me for a discussion about films, Theory, Marxism, History, and some other stuff too! Spoiler alerts for Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which came out like twenty-five years ago, D.A.R.Y.L., which came out like forty years ago, Shane, which came out like seventy years ago, and some other films too.

This was a fun discussion, we use these films to discuss the notion of the Human and the Machine, and talk about that perennial Human insecurity; what makes me different from the trees and the rocks and the other “machines,” or “assemblages,” all around me?

We also talk a bit about History, Politics, and Marxism; we blow off some steam that’s been building up in the wake of someone, who remains unnamed but you can find it in a certain comment section, using Lenin in an absurd elitist way to tell us to shut up and stop being toxic and get back to work; and we just have some fun and shoot the s**t!!!

This one was fun! I’m glad we all watched these films and talked about them together!! Shout out to all the homies and your families, we’ll see you on the next one!!

In this episode, The Dangerous Maybe and I talk about a few things. We planned on reading from Todd’s Book, The Cambridge Introduction to Jacques Lacan, and discussing some concepts of “Late Lacan.” We still accomplished this, but we were also kinda preoccupied with breaking events, namely the violent death of far right provocateur Charlie Kirk. We also discuss a piece from Levi Bryant on The Capitalist Discourse and how Superego might give those of us less enamored by “Late Lacan” some insight into Sinthome. We also discuss the problem with Marxism in today’s world, and loft an excellent idea for a documentary series.

The homie Sean No Future joins me in this conversation about History and the Future. We’re a bit loosey goosey in this episode, because we’re buddies and we’re kinda just chillin, but we’re also carrying on a discussion that has been unfolding between us, and online in general. We were going to talk about the movie Alien Covenant, and we did a bit, but we were also too engaged in the topics we started talking about to have a more focused discussion of the movie, so when it comes up it might seem a bit out of place, but just run with it.

We ask whether or not Humans need God, posit that we’ve already replaced God with something else, complain a bit about stuff we can’t control or change, talk Marcuse vs Girard (Rousseau vs Hobbes 2.0), and generally have a good ol’ time just kickin it and catching up!

Nick’s position is extreme, but as far as I can tell is consistent, and makes more sense than anyone else I am aware of in the various /acc camps.

In this episode, I’m joined by The Dangerous Maybe and Sean K Mittelstaedt to deepen the conversation on Structural, or Secondary, Narcissism and the Social (or Society, or the Socius—I’m not sure what the best way to sum that up is, but the three are distinct yet very similar.)

Mikey and Sean draw out some of the intricacies of the Clinical Structures, and I got to sit back and be a part of the audience for a bit - this show is great!!!

We go on to ponder and opine on just what the hell is going on with the world these days, but I think we resist the temptation to just start yelling at clouds! Todd doesn’t appreciate it when people go on about just how impactful he is/has been on contemporary Theory and Philosophy, so I won’t—but I will say that I respect and look up to Todd more than just about anybody else.

This conversation is a continuation of what Mikey and I have been talking about, and also follows on from one of Todd’s recent Why Theory? episodes with Ryan Engley—another awesome guy you should get to know if you don’t already!

Todd lofts a very powerful Hegelian interpretation of Intelligence, tells us why all the current Girard hype might be a bit mistaken, and opines on Freedom, Utility, Finitude, Creativity, and Subjectivity.
