Dear Christian next unto the glory of God, thy good was chiefly aimed at in bringing this work to light- be not therefore wanting to thy selfe, and thy soul's bliss. Remember the day cannot always last, the night will come, and thou know-est not how soon- This may be the last book that ever thou shalt read, and this the last hour that ever thou shalt spend here on earth- Oh use it consci-onably, and bless God for any furtherance in thy way to happi-ness.

It concerns us to take notice of this voice, that we may not be taken unprovided- Amos iv. 12, 4 Thus will I do unto thee- prepare to meet thy God, Israel.' When God threateneth, we had need make serious preparation how we shall prevent or bear the stroke of an angry God.

And Solomon seems to hint at something of this kind when he saith, -Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water- but a man of understanding will draw it out,- Prov. 20. 5. You are here presented with an account of the gracious dealings of God with the author, in the matter of the salvation of his soul. At an early period of his life, the Lord was pleased to begin a work of grace in his heart- and under the first stage of this work, you have set forth before you, the pharisaical exercises of .his mind- but when the work of conviction becomes deeper, and the fountain of iniquity in his -breast is fairly broken up, you will see something of what he suffered-within from a sense of sin, and of the lost condition in which he saw himself plunged.

Thomas Manton preached, -Slumber is the cause of sleeping. Mark the order in the text- they first slumbered, and afterwards slept. One degree of carelessness makes way for another- and usually there is a lesser degree at first. Take heed of the beginnings of declinations. If we would avoid sleep, we must avoid slumber. No man becomes stark naught at the first step. One careless prayer makes way for another. Give way to it now, and it will settle into an utter deadness at last. Men fear not the danger of little sins, and so are hardened under them, till they fall into greater.- Narrated by T M Sullivan

-There is in us a kind of madness, for our lusts pass all measure, and cannot be satisfied, and following upon that, burst out into open rebellion. No matter what God does, we will not be bridled, nor be held captive under his hand. Behold two notable faults which are to be found and seen in our nature. The one is our fickleness and wandering heads- the other is our rebellion and stiff necks, in that we will in no wise be subject to God.

There is says an ingenious physician a disease which sometimes affects the body and afterwords communicates its baneful influence to the mind over which it hangs such a cloud of horrors as renders life absolutely insupportable. In this dreadful state every pleasing idea is banished and all the sources of comfort in life are poisoned. Neither fortune, honors, friends, nor family, can afford the smallest satisfaction.
