  • Why ”30 or 40 Million” Border Crossers Is False - Cato, CIS and Heritage All Say 5-7M

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

A claim on The Benny Show put 30 to 40 million "unvetted, unvaccinated" border crossers under Biden, "all military aged males." We rate it false - truth score 0.07, confidence 0.90.

Cato (libertarian), the Center for Immigration Studies (restrictionist) and Heritage - who agree on nothing else in immigration policy - all put the net increase at roughly 5 to 7 million.

Episode 22:27. The claim was said on July 27, 2026, on "LIVE With Acting Legend James Woods Right Now Going Scorched Earth on COLLAPSE Of California," at 4:55. One caveat we say out loud: the timestamp lands on James Woods's turn, but the transcript excerpt we hold for that turn is about Gavin Newsom and does not contain the line. We have not resolved the attribution from our own material.

We steelman the grievance at full strength before landing the verdict. The 2021-2024 border was historically unprecedented: the Republican-led House Homeland Security Committee counted 10.8 million CBP encounters across FY2021-FY2024, about 8.7 million at the southwest border. CBP estimates roughly 2 million known gotaways - people detected but never apprehended, uncounted by construction. The DHS Inspector General found CBP released a migrant who was on a terrorist watchlist, and 385 watchlist encounters occurred between ports of entry since FY2021, including 169 in FY2023 alone. All of that is documented and none of it is in dispute here.

What fails is the arithmetic and the quantifier. Encounters are events, not people - the same person turned back three times counts three times, and recidivism ran 11-27%. Pew puts the entire unauthorized population, including people who arrived decades ago, at a record 14 million in 2023; the claim asserts 30-40 million arrived in four years. "All military aged males" is contradicted by the same House factsheet that supplies the 10.8 million: of 8.7 million southwest encounters, 2.66 million were family-unit members and 546,255 were unaccompanied children - over a third. Women are 46% of the unauthorized population. And the COVID vaccination requirement behind "unvaccinated" applied to immigrant-visa and green-card applicants going through legal consular processing, not to people crossing between ports of entry; the CDC has since removed it entirely.

We also trace "military-age male" back to what it actually is: a targeting category, not a demographic one. It enters American usage as a Vietnam body-count convention, is standardized during the Obama-era drone campaign - the New York Times reported in May 2012 that the method "in effect counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants" - jumps to immigration in the 2015 Syrian refugee debate, and ends up in the signed text of Proclamation 10886 in January 2025.

One more thing worth sitting with: Cato's rebuttal is a reductio, not a denial. If the population really were 33 million, illegal immigrants would have an incarceration rate of 272 per 100,000 - nearly 80% below the native-born rate. The larger you make the number, the better it makes the group look on the very metrics it is deployed to indict.

What we do not know: the true unauthorized population is genuinely contested (DHS methodology yields roughly 11 million, Pew says 14 million, FAIR says 18.6 million - a 69% spread). The composition of the gotaway population is unmeasured, and it is plausible it skews more heavily male than the encounter population does; nobody has data on this, and it is the strongest empirical point available to the claim's defenders. We could not source where "40" came from at all.

  • Benny Johnson’s Fauci Body Count Went From 7 Million to ’Tens of Millions’ in 8 Days

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Benny Johnson opened his July 30, 2026 episode by calling Anthony Fauci "the single greatest mass murderer in modern history," with a body count "much higher than Hitler."

We rate that FALSE — truth score 0.04, confidence 0.92 — and the reason is arithmetic, not partisanship.

Grant the most hostile assumption available: Fauci is solely responsible for the entire COVID-19 pandemic. WHO puts global excess deaths at 14.9 million for 2020-2021. Historians reckon Mao at roughly 40-50 million, Stalin at 6-20 million, Hitler at 11-12 million noncombatant victims plus tens of millions more if you count the war. The claim fails at its own ceiling — and the ceiling isn't available anyway, because NIH's genomic analysis found the bat coronaviruses studied at Wuhan under the EcoHealth grant are decades of evolutionary distance from SARS-CoV-2, while The Lancet Infectious Diseases estimates vaccination averted about 19.8 million deaths in year one.

We state the grievance at full strength before landing the verdict. NIH itself found EcoHealth Alliance failed to report a Wuhan experiment in which a chimeric bat coronavirus made humanized mice sicker. The CIA assesses a research-related origin as marginally more likely, at low confidence, with most of the intelligence community still favoring natural spillover. Fauci invoked the Fifth more than 100 times before Rand Paul's committee on July 29, 2026. That is a serious case for oversight. It is not within orders of magnitude of Mao.

The finding is the sequence: 7 million (Rand Paul, on Fox) to 7.5 million (The Benny Show, ~July 27) to 8 million (Johnson on X) to "tens of millions" (July 30). Eight days. The documented base — same grant, same reporting violation, same notes, same declassified Livermore memo — never changed. We could not source "tens of millions" to any published figure in any direction.

We also trace where the frame came from, and it did not start on the right: Larry Kramer's June 1988 open letter in the San Francisco Examiner, "I call you a murderer," aimed at the same man over AIDS drug trials. Fauci called him. It ended in parallel-track access reform and thirty years of friendship.

What we do not claim: COVID's origin is genuinely unresolved, the exact count of Fifth Amendment invocations is unreconciled across sources, and no statute, conduct or subpoena has been reported in Florida's investigation.

  • ”A Few Communists”: The Helicopter Joke and the Arithmetic It Erases

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

On July 28, 2026, at 56:34 in the episode "Jon Stewart's Kaitlin Collins Interview Will Piss You Off," Louder with Crowder host Steven Crowder said of Pinochet's Chile: "Sure, you had a few communists who went for helicopter rides and we never saw them again. But if you weren't a communist, you weren't at great risk." We rate that mostly-false — truth score 0.12, confidence 0.90.

The first half is true, and Crowder does say he isn't justifying "the fascist response." The death flights are documented: the Chilean armed forces admitted to the Supreme Court in 2001 that detainees were thrown into the sea, and a 2003 judicial investigation concluded at least 400 of the disappeared were dumped there, many bound to rail track.

The safe-harbor half is where it fails. Chile's own post-dictatorship state ran two truth commissions. Rettig (1991) counted 2,279 killed and about 1,200 disappeared. Valech (2004/05, expanded 2011) counted 27,255 political prisoners, revised upward to 38,254, roughly 94% of them tortured. In 1977 the junta banned every political party, including the Christian Democrats who had backed the coup. DINA shot Christian Democrat co-founder Bernardo Leighton in Rome and car-bombed Socialist Orlando Letelier in Washington, D.C., killing Ronni Karpen Moffitt, a 25-year-old American riding with him. Two teenagers were set on fire by an army patrol at a 1986 protest. About 200,000 people, roughly 2% of the population, went into exile.

Not being a communist lowered your risk. It did not make you safe.

  • Zero and Certainty: The Cheapest Claim You Can Make Is a Claim About the Record

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

We analyze a rhetorical phenomenon called record-rounding, where media figures misrepresent partial or unverified information as settled fact. The text examines two primary examples: a podcast host presenting unauthenticated social media posts as an official interview and a commentator claiming a total absence of research regarding transgender athletes despite existing studies. By investigating these claims, the sources demonstrate how speakers either inflate rumors into certainty or deflate complex data sets to zero to create more compelling narratives. This logical error, known as an argument from ignorance, allows influencers to bypass nuances and present an evidentiary void or a manufactured record as a definitive premise. Ultimately, the analysis reveals that such tactics are politically neutral tools used across the spectrum to make arguments appear unassailable. This overview highlights how the deletion of qualifiers like "reportedly" fundamentally changes the public's perception of truth.

  • Minnesota’s Real Autism Fraud and the Missing Word | Matt Walsh Ep. 1811 Fact-Check

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Examines the evolution of a political narrative in Minnesota that characterizes Somali-run autism centers as inherently fraudulent. While legitimate federal prosecutions have uncovered significant instances of Medicaid fraud within the state's autism programs, the sources document how these specific crimes have been expanded into categorical generalizations against an entire ethnic community. High-profile media figures and politicians have leveraged these real legal cases to claim that the centers are entirely fake and that Somali immigrants largely avoid traditional employment, despite data showing their labor participation exceeds the state average. This narrative also overlooks clinical research indicating higher autism prevalence rates within the Somali-American population, which naturally increases program enrollment. Ultimately, the analysis highlights how a complex issue involving genuine oversight failures was transformed into a simplified rhetorical tool used to dismiss the trauma of a marginalized group. The text concludes that while substantial fraud exists, the framing of it as a universal trait of a specific people relies on misleading statistics and the omission of broader context.

  • Two Words in Athens: How ”In Greece” Went Missing and a Foreign Statistic Became an American One

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

A recent fact-check examines how a speech by Secretary of State Marco Rubio was edited to create a misleading claim about domestic terrorism in the United States. While Rubio correctly noted that 80% of radical violence in Greece is driven by far-left actors, a widely circulated video clip removed the geographical qualifier "In Greece" to suggest the statistic applied to America. Data from organizations like CSIS, the ADL, and the Cato Institute contradict this narrative, showing that right-wing extremism has historically been more frequent and deadly in the U.S. despite a documented increase in left-wing incidents in 2025. This misinformation spread rapidly through conservative media and social platforms, serving as a powerful example of how minor edits can fundamentally alter the meaning of a statistic. The report highlights that while the underlying figure was technically accurate for a specific European nation, its decontextualized use created an inaccurate picture of the American security landscape. • Blaming H-1B Visas for IBM’s 25% Crash: Fact-Checking PBD Podcast #833

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

On PBD Podcast #833, published July 16, 2026, a co-host opens at the eighteen-second mark by tying IBM's 25% single-day stock collapse to H-1B hiring. We scored the two halves separately: the stock drop is true, 0.97. The causal tie to H-1B hiring is mostly-false, 0.15, and flagged as misinformation.

IBM gave its own account the same day, in Arvind Krishna's letter to investors filed as Exhibit 99.1 to the July 14 8-K: a shortfall in Z and its associated software stack, after clients shifted quarterly capex toward supply-constrained servers, storage and memory ahead of expected price increases. The same quarter's 10-Q shows IBM Z revenue down 42% while Distributed Infrastructure rose 37.3% — "our strongest quarter on record." We found no sell-side note or mainstream financial report attributing the drop to H-1B, immigration, or offshoring.

Then IBM's own H-1B footprint inverts the claim: group approvals fell from 4,879 in FY2016 (sixth nationally) to 3,315 in FY2022 (twelfth), while the national program grew.

The grievance underneath the claim is real, and we steelman it at full length — ProPublica's finding that more than 20,000 US workers aged 40+ were cut in five years, the 2020 EEOC determination, the $60,000 exemption unindexed since 1998 that makes "train your replacement" legal, and the 2024 Cognizant jury verdict. We also set out what we still don't know.

  • Ballast and Payload: How a Mostly-True Podcast Moved ”China Incited BLM”

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

This report analyzes a specific instance of misinformation on the PBD Podcast, where speakers used verified facts as a delivery system for false claims about Chinese interference in the 2020 BLM protests. By interleaving accurate data about Hunter Biden with unproven assertions of foreign incitement, the program utilized a technique called paltering to make the overall narrative appear credible. Research indicates that this "ballast and payload" structure exploits illusory truth effects, as listeners who verify the easy facts tend to generalize that trust to the entire segment. The analysis also places this modern claim within a 107-year historical lineage of "hidden-hand" narratives used to delegitimize domestic civil rights movements by attributing them to foreign agitators. Ultimately, the source argues that the danger of such media is not total fabrication, but rather its mostly-accurate baseline, which builds the institutional capital necessary to launch high-stakes falsehoods.

  • The Smithsonian Warning Label: State Intervention in National History

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

In July 2026, an executive order was issued mandating the installation of warning signs outside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to alert visitors of alleged factual inaccuracies. This directive follows a White House report accusing the institution of ideological capture and a failure to properly celebrate the nation’s founding during its 250th anniversary. While the administration cites past controversial materials as evidence of bias, professional historians and museum leadership argue the order is an act of political overreach targeting interpretation rather than objective error. The conflict highlights a significant legal debate regarding the President's authority over a trust institution that historically operates with independence from executive control. Ultimately, these sources document an escalating battle over who possesses the authority to define historical truth in the public square.

  • It Must Have Been Aliens: Why a Continent That Exports a Million Cars a Year ”Never Built One”

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

The provided text refutes a viral claim made by James David Manning and amplified on a modern podcast that no African nation has ever manufactured an automobile. Data from the sources confirms that this assertion is categorically false, as countries like Morocco and South Africa export hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually to global markets. Indigenous companies such as Innoson and Kantanka further prove that local design and manufacturing have existed on the continent for decades. The analysis frames this misinformation as part of a historical pattern of achievement denial, where the accomplishments of the Global South are ignored or attributed to outside forces. This trope connects modern industrial skepticism to older colonial-era censorship and pseudo-archaeological theories regarding ancient monuments. Ultimately, the text argues that such narratives persist because they reinforce a prejudiced global hierarchy rather than reflecting economic reality.
